Course Description: The consolidation of skills acquired at the introductory level. Further development of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasis on comprehension, appreciation, and interpretation of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

iLrn Support: 1-800-990-8211. If it is a glitch, like one assignment is not going through correctly or something minor, it is best just to send me an email and let me know which assignment did not go through or was not working. This happens occasionally and it is easiest to just give me a head’s up. If you have trouble with videos not loading or something account related that is an ongoing issue, that is when you should contact iLrn.

Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete SPAN 2311 will meet the following learning outcomes:
1. Demonstrate comprehension of authentic spoken discourse produced by Spanish speakers of diverse origins.
2. Produce oral Spanish comprehensible to native speakers using complex grammatical structures to narrate, describe, and elicit information.
3. Demonstrate increasing comprehension of authentic written texts in a variety of genres.
4. Write descriptions and narratives at a low intermediate level using complex grammatical structures.
5. Formulate cohesive paragraphs and short/simple essays.
6. Describe cultural practices and products of the Spanish-speaking world drawing on authentic materials including literature and the visual arts.

Grading Policy & Procedures
In general, I do not offer extra credit. However, at the end of the semester, I apply standard rounding to everyone. An 89.4 will remain a B, but an 89.5 will round up to an A.

Scholastic Integrity
Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but not be limited to cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. See Student Handbook “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Conduct [FLB- (LOCAL)]” #18.
Disciplinary Actions [Student Handbook, #5] “When cheating, collusion, or plagiarism has occurred beyond any reasonable doubt, the instructor may give the student or students involved an “F” on a particular assignment or in the course. [See Scholastic Dishonesty FLB (Local)] The instructor shall make a written report of the incident and of the planned action to his Department Chair. The Department Chair shall report the incident and action to appropriate instructional dean who shall review the case, notify the student and, if necessary, take further action. This may involve either probation or suspension of the student or students in question. If such disciplinary action is deemed necessary, the Dean of Student Services shall be notified, and the action shall be taken through that office.”
Plagiarism, which should be avoided at all costs, includes the following student actions:
- Turning in someone else’s ideas, opinions, theories, or work as your own;
- Unintentionally or inadvertently turning in someone else’s ideas, opinions, theories, or work as your own as the result of failing to document sources both internally and in the Works Cited;
- Copying words, ideas, or images from someone without giving credit; Failing to put a quotation in quotations marks;
- Giving incorrect information about the source of information, quotations, or images;
- Changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit;
- Copying so many words, ideas, or images from a source that it makes up the majority of the student’s work, whether or not the student gives credit.

Attendance and Late Work Policy
If you must miss class, be aware you can turn in your work by the start of the missed class period and still receive full credit. As a general rule, no late work is accepted, but if there is an emergency or impediment out of your control, please contact me so we can try to find a reasonable solution. If you must be absent the day of an exam, please arrange to make it up ahead of the exam date. Arriving late, leaving early, and stepping out of the classroom affect your attendance. Please contact a classmate for information that you missed and review the day’s presentation in Canvas. After the 4th absence, the student may be administratively dropped. 3 tardies/leaving early equal one absence. At the professor’s discretion, excessive tardiness may be counted as an absence.

Cultural Presentations
The cultural presentations will be prepared and presented in groups, but the grades will be individual. Be sure to pull your weight and give everyone a part because part of your grade will come from the average points earned from your peer evaluations. Pay careful attention to the grading rubrics (in Canvas) to know how you will be graded.
Exams
Due to the nature of language learning, all of the exams will be cumulative. This means you are still responsible for remembering vocabulary, conjugations, and material from prior chapters for each exam.
Escritura
The composition will be started in class and then revised and finished outside of class. You will prepare several different drafts as part of the revision process. Be sure to keep all your work from each step (in the folder provided) in order to receive full points at the end.
In-Class Tasks
There will be 5-6 in-class tasks during the semester. They may or may not be announced and could be quizzes, or other activities that cover grammar, vocabulary, culture including the lecturas, and/or any material pertaining to the chapter being studied.
Drop Dates and Withdrawals
Please let me know if you plan to drop the course so we can discuss your options. However, if you feel you need to drop the course the last day to drop without a “W” is June 7, 2018 (Date of Record) and the last day to drop the course with a grade of “W” is June 28, 2018.
Grade input
For the summer, I try to get work graded and back to you within 4 class periods but remember that the standard grade turn-around is one calendar week.
Tobacco-Free Campus
NCTC restricts the use of all tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, electronic cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco on campus property.
