Topic

General Description of Subject Matter

Safety in the Welding Shop

Identify several common causes of accidents; recognize possible safety hazards in the welding shop. Select and properly use safety equipment appropriate to working conditions

Welding Joints, Positions and Symbols

Identify the five basic welding joints, describe the various welds that may be used in each welding joint

Oxy-fuel Gas Welding

Define welding as a joining process; demonstrate the correct method of testing for leaks on all components of the oxyacetylene welding outfit. Run a continuous weld pool on base metal using an oxyacetylene welding torch.

Brazing and Braze Welding

Differentiate between brazing and braze welding, select the proper filler metal and flux for brazing. List the proper order procedures for making an acceptable brazed weld.

 

 

 

Shield Metal Arc Welding Equipment  and Supplies

Components of a shielded metal arc welding station, define constant current welding machine. Methods used in welding machines for creating an ac or dc welding current, Demonstrate the ability to identify and specify carbon steel, low alloy steel, corrosion resistant steel and nonferrous covered electrodes using the AWS electrode classification system.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding

Describe how and why electricity flows in any electrical circuit and list the three variables in Ohms law. Ability to strike a welding arc, to restart a welding and blend the new and old beads. Describe all types of weld defects and demonstrate our ability to inspect and differentiate between acceptable and unacceptable welds.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding , Gas Metal Arc Welding and Flux Core Arc Welding  equipment and supplies

Identify and describe the function of each component of a GTAW, GMAW and FCAW station. The various types of shielding gages used in GMAW and FCAW. The type of electrodes used in GMAW, FCAW using AWS classifications.

Gas Metal and Flux Core  Arc Welding

Various GMAW metal transfer methods, considering arc characteristics, weld characteristics, and out of position welds. Types of self shielded and gas shielded methods of FCAW. Various types of shielding gases used for GMAW.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding

Contrast the effects of DCEP and DECN and ac on surface cleaning efficiency, electrode life and weld characteristics. Properly assemble the parts of a GTAW welding station and GTAW touch. Correctly set and adjust the welding current and shielding gas flow rate.

 

 

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY

 

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered. Students absent (excused or unexcused) for 15 percent for their required classes may receive an “F” for the course or may be dropped from the course. Students who come in late or leave class early for two classes will be counted absent for one class. Class participation assignments and exams will be used to determine regular attendance for online students. A student that is compelled to be absent when a test is given, will petition the instructor, in advance, for permission to take the exam early. A student will be allowed to drop one exam from the required exams given during the course. Required work not completed by due dates will not be allowed to be turned in late without instructor approval.

 

 

 

Last day to Withdraw

 

For the spring 2015 semester, the last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is April 9, 2015.
