This course provides clinical experience in fundamental nursing skills. The nursing process is applied to provide individualized care designed to meet a client's particular needs. The geriatric client is the focus of care.

1 DOSAGE CALCULATIONS TEST-
A pass/fail component of the clinical grade includes a dosage calculations test given at the beginning of the semester. The student must achieve a minimum score of 100% before being allowed to administer medication in the clinical setting. If the student does not achieve a score of 100% on the first attempt, two more testing opportunities will be given. Failure to achieve a score of 100% by the third attempt is a clinical failure and the student will be dropped from the program. A grade of “F” will be recorded Pass or Fail
1 A skills competency demonstration will be performed to assess proficiency and knowledge of basic nursing skills. Three (3) attempts to demonstrate competency will be allowed. A quiz or other written assignment associated with the skills check off may be required. Students who fail to pass the skill demonstration and/or written competency in three (3) attempts will be unable to successfully complete the clinical rotation and will be dropped from the program. A grade of “F” will be recorded. Pass or Fail

Student evaluations of clinical competency will be based on meeting the clinical outcomes derived from the Differentiate Entry Level Competencies (DELC) as stated in the course syllabus, and shall include all actual, as well as laboratory simulated, patient care situations. Grades will be determined by utilizing the point sheet and the following grading criteria:
90-100 A Students begin the semester with
80-89 B 100 points. Points may be deducted
77-79 C daily according to behaviors described in

INSTITUTIONAL LEARNING GOALS
o A quality general education curriculum in all associate degree programs.
o Quality freshman and sophomore level courses in arts and sciences which parallel the lower division offerings of four-year colleges and universities.
x Quality technical programs leading directly to careers in semi-skilled and skilled occupations, and quality technical education programs up to two years in length leading to certificates and associate degrees.
o Quality programs and services in support of adult literacy and basic skills development as a mean of workforce enhancement and expanding access to higher education.
PROGRAM PURPOSE STATEMENT
NCTC seeks to implement its goal of providing quality technical programs leading directly to careers in semi-skilled and skilled occupations, and quality technical education programs up to two years in length leading to certificates and associate degrees by offering a coherent sequence of courses with appropriate breadth and depth to prepare students for success in the workforce.
DEPARTMENTAL PURPOSE STATEMENT
To prepare Vocational Nursing students for licensure and advanced degrees in health sciences is the purpose of the department.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of Clinical I, the student will be able to perform the following duties:
I. Member of the Profession: (DEC 1-4) (SCANS 1-7) (QSEN 2,3,4)
A. Function within the nurse’s legal scope of practice and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the employing health care institution or practice setting.
B. Assume responsibility and accountability for the quality of nursing care provided to patients and their families.
C. Contribute to activities that promote the development and practice of vocational nursing.
D. Demonstrate responsibility for continued competence in nursing practice, and develop insight through reflection, self-analysis, self-care, and lifelong learning.
II. Provider of Patient-Centered Care: (DEC 5-12) (SCANS 1-7) (QSEN 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
A. Use clinical reasoning and established evidence-based policies as the basis for decision making in nursing practice.
B. Assist in determining the physical and mental health status and health needs and preferences of culturally, ethnically, and socially diverse patients and their families based on interpretation of health-related data.
C. Report data to assist in the identification of problems and formulation of goals/ outcomes and patient-centered plans of care in collaboration with patients, their families, and the interdisciplinary health care team.
D. Provide safe, compassionate, basic nursing care to assigned patients with predictable health care needs through a supervised directed scope of practice.
E. Implement aspects of the plan of care within legal, ethical and regulatory parameters and in consideration of patient factors.
F. Identify and report alterations in patient responses to therapeutic interventions in comparison to expected outcomes.
G. Implement teaching plans for patients and their families with common health problems and well-defined health learning needs.
H. Assist in the coordination of human and materiel resources for the provision of care for assigned patients and their families.
III. Patient Safety Advocate: (DEC 13-18) (SCANS 1-7) (QSEN 3,4,5)
A. Demonstrate knowledge of the Texas Nursing Practice Act and Texas Board of Nursing rules that emphasize safety as well as all federal, state, and local government and accreditation organization safety requirements and standards.
B. Implement measures to promote quality and a safe environment for patients and others.
C. Assist in the formulation of goals and outcomes to reduce patient risk.
D. Obtain instruction, supervision, or training as needed when implementing nursing procedures or practices.
E. Comply with mandatory reporting requirements of the Texas Nursing Practice Act.
F. Accept and make assignments that take into consideration patient safety and organizational policy.
IV. Member of the Health Care Team: (DEC 19-25) (SCANS 1-7) (QSEN 2,3,4,5,6)
A. Communicate and collaborate with patients, their families, and the interdisciplinary health care team to assist in the planning, delivery, and coordination of patient-centered care to assigned patients.
B. Participate as an advocate in activities that focus on improving the health care of patients and their families.
C. Participate in the identification of patient needs for referral to resources that facilitate continuity of care and ensure confidentiality.
D. Communicate and collaborate in a timely manner with members of the interdisciplinary health care team to promote and maintain optimal health status of patients and their families.
E. Communicate patient data using technology to support decision making to improve patient care.
F. Assign nursing care to LVNs or unlicensed personnel based upon an analysis of patient or unit need
G. Supervise nursing care provided by others for whom the nurse is responsible.
