Course Description:

First Year Experience is a required, non-credit 4-week course designed to provide students with the tools needed to persist and succeed at North Central Texas College. Topics covered in the course include: NCTC technology, campus resources, college classroom expectations, study techniques, test-taking, financial literacy, and campus safety. First-time college students

(excluding Dual Credit) are required to pass NCTC 1001. The course does not satisfy requirements for any degree plan at NCTC, has no pre-requisites, and is non-transferable.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular attendance and active, prepared participation of all students is essential. There are no excused absences. Students who miss more than 20% of the course (equivalent to two classes in a 4-week course) may receive an F. If you find yourself in this situation, please communicate with the instructor. However, it is your responsibility to drop yourself. Students are required to complete/pass NCTC1001 within earning 15 credit hours, those who drop must re-enroll in the next long semester (fall/spring) or a registration hold will be placed on your account.

 

The Attendance grading criteria is based on participation and completion of certain assignments in this online class.  You are expected to actively participate in the homework assignments, discussion posts, and any other assignments on a weekly basis.  Please check your student e-mail and Canvas message frequently.

 

Documents of accidents, court appearances, and other emergency type situations must be presented to the instructor for consideration. Appointments and making up tests in another class are not viable excuses.

 

*Per NCTC policy, ALL INSTRUCTORS are required to take attendance every class meeting for reporting purposes

 

 
   

 

 

 

DISABILITY SERVICES (Office for Students with Disabilities)

The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) provides support services for students with disabilities, students enrolled in technical areas of study, and students who are classified as special populations (i.e. single parents).

Support services for students with disabilities might include appropriate and reasonable accommodations, or they may be in the form of personal counseling, academic counseling, career counseling, etc. Furthermore, OSD Counselors work with students to encourage self-advocacy and promote empowerment. The Counselors also provides resource information, disability-related information, and adaptive technology for students who qualify.

Student Success Center

The Student Success Center is designed to help all students at NCTC develop tools to achieve their academic goals. The center links students to FREE tutoring, including a Writing Center, a Math Lab, and free online tutoring in the evening. The NCTC Completion Center is a comprehensive student engagement program that increases retention and completion rates of first-time, low income students. Services include:

CONNECT for Success (Early Alert) and CARES

The NCTC Early Alert program has been established to assist students who are at risk of failing or withdrawing from a course. Your instructor may refer you to this program if you are missing assignments, failing tests, excessively absent, or have personal circumstances impacting your academic performance. If submitted as an Early Alert, you will be notified via your NCTC e-mail address and then contacted by a Counseling and Testing advisor or counselor to discuss possible strategies for completing your course successfully.

 

The NCTC CARES (Campus Assessment Response Evaluation Services) Team addresses behavior which may be disruptive, harmful or pose a threat to the health and safety of the NCTC community-such as stalking, harassment, physical or emotional abuse, violent or threatening behavior, or self-harm. As a student, you have the ability to report concerning behavior which could impact your own safety or the safety of another NCTC student. Library Services

NCTC Libraries provide over 45,000 items across five campuses to serve the research needs of students, faculty, and staff. Many of these materials, including media items, may be checked out for a period of time for use outside the library.
