Course Description for Math 1314 (NCTC Catalog):

In-depth study and applications of polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions, and systems of equations using matrices. Additional topics such as sequences, series, probability, and conic may be included.

Course Description for NCBM 0214 (NCTC Catalog): A study of relations and functions, inequalities, algebraic expressions and equations (absolute value, polynomial, radical, rational), with a special emphasis on linear and quadratic expressions and equations. This course does not count toward graduation at NCTC.

Course Prerequisite(s): Pass Math 0305 with a “C” or better, or earn satisfactory TSI Assessment placement score, or earn satisfactory placement score on another approved assessment.

Required course materials: 

Calculators are permitted.

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class, or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one.  Student hours may be held in-person or online.  See below for instructions on where/when/how instructors will offer student hours in this class.

 Above 60% = P;   Below 60% = F

 Late work policy:

Homework and Quizzes may be worked past their due date with a late grade penalty.  No Make-up  Exams will be allowed.  They must be completed on or before their due date or you will be given a zero.

Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance.  There are math tutors available on every campus and online.  This service is free for all students enrolled in an NCTC math class. COURSE POLICIES

Academic Integrity Policy:

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion.  The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Code of Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.  

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

  1. Zero on the assignment
  2. Failing grade for the course

 

Attendance Policy:

Regular attendance is expected and necessary for student success in this course. For more information on attendance regulations please see the 2022-2023 NCTC Catalog.  (https://www.nctc.edu/catalog; Click on 2022-2023 CATALOG and go to page 138 to see Attendance Regulations)

 

  • Attendance will be based on completion of weekly assignments.  You must log in and complete required assignments every week (at any time during the week) or you will be considered absent for the week. Optional activities such as study plan or videos do not satisfy the attendance requirement. You must attempt at least one graded assignment (e.g., homework, practice quiz, or exam) each week.
    • To be counted present, you must log in and complete at least ONE weekly assignment with a score of 60% or higher. If needed, seek help so that you can re-take quizzes or re-try homework in order to get your grade

**All homework assignments are due on Sundays by midnight.**

 

Withdrawal Policy

A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

 

Last day to withdraw from the course with a “W” is: Monday, July 15, 2024

 

Student Learning Outcomes:  At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Define, represent, and perform operations on real and complex numbers.
  2. Recognize, understand, and analyze features of a function.
  3. Recognize and use algebraic (field) properties, concepts, procedures (including factoring), and algorithms to combine, transform, and evaluate absolute value, polynomial, radical, and rational expressions.
  4. Identify and solve absolute value, polynomial, radical, and rational equations.
  5. Identify and solve absolute value and linear inequalities.
  6. Model, interpret and justify mathematical ideas and concepts using multiple representations.
  7. Connect and use multiple strands of mathematics in situations and problems, as well as in the study of other disciplines.
