Course description: The NCBM supports students in developing skills, strategies, and reasoning needed to succeed in mathematics, including communication and appropriate use of technology. Topics include the study of numeracy and the real number system; algebraic concepts, notation, and reasoning; quantitative relationships; mathematical models; and problem solving. This course does not count toward graduation at NCTC.

 

Course prerequisites: Pass Math 0305 with a “C” or better, or earn satisfactory TSI Assessment placement score, or earn satisfactory placement score on another approved assessment.

STUDENT HOURS (OFFICE HOURS)

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance. There are math tutors available on every campus and online. The faculty member reserves the right to make changes to this published syllabus if it is in the best interest of the educational development of this class. Any such changes will be announced as soon as possible in person and/or writing.

SUMMARY OF COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

 

This course is graded as a Pass (P) or a Fail (F). As a part of your grade in this class you will be required to meet with the instructor once every 3 weeks. This means we will meet a minimum of 5 times over the 16 weeks of this course. Here are the guidelines for those meetings:

  1. Not every “3-week period” is exactly 3 weeks.
  2. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule each of these meetings.
  3. To schedule a meeting with the instructor, send the instructor an email either from your NCTC email address or through Canvas with possible dates and times. The instructor will respond in a timely fashion.
  4. Each appointment must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. If you decide to give less than 2 days’ notice, then it may not be possible to meet.
  5. Multiple meetings per any given 3-week period in the schedule below will only count once for the 5 official meetings required for your P in this course.
  6. There are no extensions given to any meeting for a given 3-week period.
  7. For each meeting we will discuss your past and current progress and you will be awarded credit for that meeting AFTER those goals are met.

 

You must meet once during each of the following 3-week periods:

1st Period: Tuesday, 1/17 to Friday, 2/3

2nd Period: Monday, 2/6 to Friday, 2/24

3rd Period: Monday, 2/27 to Friday, 3/24

4th Period: Monday, 3/27 to Friday, 4/14

5th Period: Monday, 4/17 to Friday, 5/5

 

To earn the P for this class you will need to have successfully completed all 5 official meetings AND earned an A, B or C in Math 1332. 0502.

 

To earn the F for this class you will have successfully completed less than 5 official meetings OR earned a D or F in Math 1332.0502.

 

Final grade scale:  The NCBM course will be graded on a P/F basis.

 

Late work policy: No late work is accepted.

COURSE POLICIES

 

 

Academic Integrity Policy:

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion.  The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Code of Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.  

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

  1. Zero on the assignment
  2. Failing grade for the course

 

Attendance Policy:

Withdrawal Policy

A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

 

Last day to withdraw from the course with a “W” is: Monday, April 3, 2023.

 

Student Learning Outcomes:  At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Use appropriate symbolic notation and vocabulary to communicate, interpret, and explain mathematical concepts.
  2. Define, represent, and perform operations on real numbers, applying numeric reasoning to investigate and describe quantitative relationships and solve real world problems in a variety of contexts.
  3. Use algebraic reasoning to solve problems that require ratios, rates, percentages, and proportions in a variety of contexts using multiple representations.
  4. Apply algebraic reasoning to manipulate expressions and equations to solve real world problems.
  5. Use graphs, tables, and technology to analyze, interpret, and compare data sets.
  6. Construct and use mathematical models in verbal, algebraic, graphical, and tabular form to solve problems from a variety of contexts and to make predictions and decisions.
