Catalog Description

An introductory course for non-music majors covering elements of music, a brief study of musical forms, historical periods and composers. An effort is made to develop the listening repertoire.  This is not a performance course, and the ability to read music is not required.

REQUIRED TECHNOLOGY:

In addition to the required text, students in this course must have access to a computer with high-speed internet access, Microsoft Word, Adobe , and software that supports jpeg, avi and wmv files (free downloadable internet links available at the Resource Tab). Tests will have listening samples embedded.

 

TIME, WRITING & RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS:

This course requires a good deal of reading, listening, observation and writing.  It is your responsibility to ensure that all written assignments use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation and that you use the required font and size of font. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

 

  1. Demonstrate the ability to recognize and describe musical elements including rhythm, music notation, melody, harmony, key, musical texture and musical form.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical musical periods from 450 AD to the present.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to recognize styles, music, and composers from each period.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to identify and associate social, religious, and economic events which correlate to musical trends.
  5. Describe in some detail and discuss perceptively the role of music in the well-being of the human spirit.

GRADING POLICY AND PROCEDURES 

 

 

No late Assignments will be accepted.  You have access to all dates for written assignments in advance.  “Start Early, Finish Early.” If any due date is changed, it will always be in your favor.

Grades are based on the following:

50% of overall grade:  5 Tests

20% of overall grade:  5 Quizzes

10% of overall grade: Composer Paper

10% of overall grade: Group Project

5% of overall grade: Defining Music Paper 

5% of overall grade: Participation

 

Explanation of each grade category:

 

 

TESTS:

All tests will be given in class, and each test will include a listening component. Each test is worth 10% of your overall grade.

·         Test One: Elements – Middle Ages – Renaissance

·         Test Two: The Baroque Era

·         Test Three: The Classical Era

·         Test Four: The Romantic Era

·         Test Five: The 20th Century and Beyond

 

Quizzes:

All quizzes will be given in class. Each quiz is worth 4% of your overall grade.

·         Quiz One: Terms

·         Quiz Two: Baroque Composers

·         Quiz Three: “Amadeus”

·         Quiz Four: Presentations

·         Quiz Five: 20th Century and Beyond

 

 

 

COMPOSER PAPER:

 

·         Write a paper over a Classical composer.  Choose a composer mentioned in the Textbook.  If you want to write your paper over a composer not mentioned in the Textbook, ask me first.

·         Your paper should include what I call the Five W’s:

o   Who is this person?

o   When did this person live and work?

o   Where did they live and work?

o   What did this composer write?

o   Why are they worthy of study?

·         Use formal writing practices. MLA Style, 12pt Times New Roman font.

·         You MUST cite your sources and include a Bibliography.

·         Four pages minimum, Five pages maximum. The Bibliography page does not count.

·         Use at least three sources. Wikipedia is not allowed.

·         Due on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1st, 2016 at 11:59pm.  This is the last regular day of class, NOT the Final Exam day.  The Composer Paper is due BEFORE Finals Week begins.

·         You must submit your paper using Turnitin.

·         No late assignments accepted. “Start Early, Finish Early.”

·         10% of your final grade.

·         TIPS:

o   Write your paper over the composer you are assigned for your Group Project.  Finish your paper before your group project presentation.

o   The first place to check for information is the library at NCTC Corinth.  One of the librarians also teaches Music Appreciation and the library has a very large selection of books and videos over the major composers.

o   You will be given time in class to visit the library and research your group project.  You may also use this time to research your paper.

o   The first book/encyclopedia you should look at is Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

 

 

 

 

 

 

GROUP PROJECT:

 

1.      ASSIGNMENT

a.       The instructor will use Canvas to randomly divide the class into teams of three students each. Each team will be assigned a composer.

b.      Each team will build a multimedia presentation over their composer using Powerpoint (or equivalent) and save it on a flash drive (or equivalent).

c.       Tell us WHO the composer was, WHERE they lived and worked, WHAT they composed, WHEN they lived, and WHY they are famous.

d.      Your group will meet during class to make decisions and divide responsibilities.

e.       Your group will put the presentation together and REHEARSE in class, but may also need to meet outside of class.

 

2.      PRESENTATIONS

a.       Each group will present their project before the class.

b.      No presentation shall be less than 10 minutes nor longer than 12 minutes.

c.       It is very important that you REHEARSE and TIME your presentation.

d.      Be constructive and helpful to one another as your project progresses.

e.       Each person on the team is expected to contribute to the planning of the project, and each person will speak as part of the presentation.

f.       You may use handouts, posters, videos, or almost anything else to make your presentation engaging and informative.

g.      You may use points out of the textbook or class notes, but you may also use other reputable sources you find in the library. Any librarian can help you with this. You must cite your sources in your presentation.

h.      WIKIPEDIA is NOT a reputable source. No Wikipedia sources will be accepted.

i.        If you are not participating in the work and library sessions, I will put you in your own group.

 

 

 

3.      GRADING

a.       The Instructor will assign a grade to each individual in the group.  The grade will be based on the presentation and content of the Group Project and the grade assigned by your peers in your group.

b.      Your peers in the group will assign you a grade based on the following criteria:

                                                              i.      ATTENDED the group meetings (25%)

                                                            ii.      PARTICIPATED by offering ideas and opinions (25%)

                                                          iii.      PREPARED their part of the project (25%)

                                                          iv.      ATTENDED on the day of the presentation (25%)

c.       The Group Project is worth 10% of your final grade.

 

“WHAT IS MUSIC?” PAPER:

 

·         Write a paper describing your own personal definition of music. Answer the question: “What is Music?”

·         5% of your final grade.

·         Use formal writing practices. MLA Style, 12pt Times New Roman font.

·         Your paper must have a MINIMUM of 3 paragraphs: Intro, Body, and Conclusion.

·         One page minimum, two pages maximum.

·         The use of FIRST PERSON (the word “I”) is acceptable for this writing assignment ONLY.

·         You are NOT required to use any sources or submit a Bibliography with this assignment.

·         Due 9/15/2016 at 11:59 pm. No late assignments accepted.

·         You MUST use Turnitin

 

PARTICIPATION:

 

·         5% of overall grade

·         Your class involvement/participation counts toward your Participation Grade.

·         If your show up late to class or leave class early, you are not fully participating.

·         If you are on your phone, computer/electronic device, have visible headphones, or are not participating in class, your grade will be adjusted appropriately. 

 

Scholastic Integrity

DO NOT CHEAT IN THIS COURSE! If I suspect that you are copying material from others, or other sources, I will immediately contact the DEAN and will have you removed from my course with a failing grade, and will request that the harshest punishment be implemented.

Disability Accommodations
