Course description:  Differentiation and integration of transcendental functions; parametric equations and polar coordinates; techniques of integration; sequences and series; improper integrals.

 

Course prerequisites:  MATH 2413 Calculus I

 

Required course materials:  Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions, 7th edition, Ron Larson & Bruce H. Edwards, Cengage, 2019

Scientific calculator (TI-30X IIS is recommended)

Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance.  There are math tutors available on every campus and online.  This service is free for all students enrolled in an NCTC math class. SUMMARY OF COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

1 Critical Thinking Assignment*: 10%

1 Diagnostic Quiz (inclass): 10%

3 Unit Tests (in person): each 20% (total 60%)

Final Exam(in person): 20%

 

 

Final grade scale:  90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

 

The final exam may also be used to replace the lowest unit test grade.

 

Late work policy:   Tests cannot be taken late.  Quizzes will not be accepted after solutions have been posted.

COURSE POLICIES

 

 

Academic Integrity Policy:

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

  1. Zero on the assignment
  2. Failing grade for the course

Withdrawal Policy

A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

 

Last Day to withdraw from a Summer II course with a “W” is: Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

Student Learning Outcomes:  At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Use the concepts of definite integrals to solve problems involving area, volume, work, and other physical applications.
  2. Use substitution, integration by parts, trigonometric substitution, partial fractions, and tables of anti-derivatives to evaluate definite and indefinite integrals.
  3. Define an improper integral.
  4. Apply the concepts of limits, convergence, and divergence to evaluate some classes of improper integrals.
  5. Determine convergence or divergence of sequences and series.
  6. Use Taylor and MacLaurin series to represent functions.
  7. Use Taylor or MacLaurin series to integrate functions not integrable by conventional methods.
  8. Use the concept of polar coordinates to find areas, lengths of curves, and representations of conic sections.
