STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (From Academic Course Guide Manual/Workforce Education Course Manual/NCTC Catalog

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1

Develop solutions for tangent and area problems using the concepts of limits, derivatives, and integrals.

2

Draw graphs of algebraic and transcendental functions considering limits, continuity, and differentiability at a point.

3

Determine whether a function is continuous and/or differentiable at a point using limits.

4

Use differentiation rules to differentiate algebraic and transcendental functions.

5

Identify appropriate calculus concepts and techniques to provide mathematical models of real-world situations and determine solutions to applied problems.

6

Evaluate definite integrals using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus

7

Articulate the relationship between derivatives and integrals using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

GRADING CRITERIA

Thinkwell Homework Assignments (20% of the Overall Average)*

You will have three attempts on each homework assignment. You may print the homework assignment out so that you can work on it and submit it all at one time. You can also complete some of the problems, close it out, come back later and complete it. I suggest if you are using the second option that you record your answers on a piece of paper before closing out just in case. I also suggest that you work the interactive practice problems (linked to the subsections) to practice the material before doing the graded homework.

Tests/Final Exam (80% of the Overall Average)**

All of the tests (including the Final Exam) will be administered on the NCTC campuses and NOT online. There is a handout, “All About the Tests!!”, that will answer all of your questions about the logistics of the tests. Make sure you check that out!!

There will be 3 tests and a comprehensive Final Exam. Each test is worth 20% of your overall average and the Final will also be worth 20%, for a grand total of 80%. You want to make sure you are super ready for each test. NO MAKE-UP TESTS. You will be allowed pen/pencil, scratch paper (supplied by the instructor) and an appropriate calculator (when authorized by the instructor).

Note: Leaving and re-entering the classroom after a test has begun will not be allowed unless details to do so have been worked out with the instructor BEFORE the test. This means there are no bathroom breaks, so make sure you plan ahead for test.

*The five (5) lowest homework assignments will be dropped from the calculations of the final grade.

**The final exam is a departmental, comprehensive algebra exam and must be taken by all students. The final exam may also be used to replace the lowest intrasemester test grade.

Grade Scale:   90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies.  It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member.  Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences.  The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence.  Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work.  Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless the absence is documented and excused by the instructor.  Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives.    Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. From Board Policy FC (LOCAL)

LAST DAY TO WITHDRAW
