Course Description (NCTC Catalog): Limits and continuity; the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; definition of the derivative of a function and techniques of differentiation; applications of the derivative to maximizing or minimizing a function; the chain rule, mean value theorem, and rate of change problems; curve sketching; definite and indefinite integration of algebraic, trigonometric, and transcendental functions, with an application to calculation of areas.
Course Prerequisite(s): MATH 2412 Pre-Calculus Math or equivalent preparation
Required Course Materials:  You will be given a free access code for MyMathLab, so you do not need to buy a code or a book.  (This is for this section only). The eText is included with MyMathLab.           eText (included in MyLab Math):  Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 3rd Edition Briggs, Cochran Gillett, Schultz. Pearson Education, Inc.  2019 2.  Scientific calculator (You may have a graphing calculator, but it is not required).

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

	At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
1	Develop solutions for tangent and area problems using the concepts of limits, derivatives, and integrals
2	Draw graphs of algebraic and transcendental functions considering limits, continuity, and differentiability at a point.
3	Determine whether a function is continuous and/or differentiable at a point using limits.
4	Use differentiation rules to differentiate algebraic and transcendental functions.
5	Identify appropriate calculus concepts and techniques to provide mathematical models of real-world situations and determine solutions to applied problems.
6	Evaluate definite integrals using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Class Notes:  I have made PowerPoint notes for each chapter, and will post them on Canvas in two formats.  The first is a pdf format with two slides to a page.  The second is the original PowerPoint format.  You need to have these notes in front of you during lecture.  Either print them out and bring to class, or bring your laptop.

 

Practice homework is not counted for a grade.  However it is extremely important to do.  It is where you really learn the material.  You may do practice homework two ways----do problems from the eText or online problems in MyLab Math. These will be posted in the Modules portion of the Canvas class.

 

Quizzes will be in two parts---online and offline.  The online part is through MyLab Math, and will be due on Sundays by 11:59pm.  You will have 5 attempts for each online quiz, and the highest grade of the 5 is the one recorded. 

The “offline” part will be like homework---do outside of class with pencil and paper and hand in to be graded.  The offline part will be due on Mondays in class.   

Both types will be posted in the Modules portion of the Canvas class under “quizzes”.

 

Exams are paper-and-pencil and will be given during class time on the exam dates. You are expected to be in class for the exams.  If you are unable to be there, you must notify the instructor on or before the scheduled day.  Then a make-up can be discussed.  If you do not notify the instructor before the test is handed back to the class, you may not take it.  Contact the instructor for alternatives. 

 

Test Revisions:  You may choose one of the 4 exams (not the final) that you have taken, and both re-do and explain how to do any problem you missed points on.  You can get back up to half the points you missed.  See Canvas for more specific instructions on what to do for the revisions.

Please do not talk to classmates while the instructor is lecturing.  You may ask questions of the instructor at any time.

Please do not leave the classroom during lecture.  It is distracting to others.   There will be a 10 minute break about half-way through the class time.

Please do not be on your cell phones during lectures.  Ideally they should be on silent and out of sight

 

 

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence.  Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work. 

I do not drop students for absences.   If you want to drop the class, you must do so yourself before the drop date.

 

Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is Thursday, November 8, 2018
