Pre-calculus, Edward B. Burger, Publisher: Thinkwell

A hard copy of the book is available in the library, you are required to purchase an access code for the online component.  Access codes are available for purchase through Canvas and at the bookstore.

TI-30X IIS or equivalent. (Graphing calculators may not be used during exams.)

Recommended: Homework notebook/binder.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Demonstrate and apply knowledge of properties of functions.

Recognize and apply algebraic and transcendental functions and solve related equations.

Apply graphing techniques to algebraic and transcendental functions.

Compute the values of trigonometric functions for key angles in all quadrants of the unit

circle measured in both degrees and radians.

Prove trigonometric identities.

Solve right and oblique triangles.

  ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION POLICY

 

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  Students are responsible for keeping up with what occurs in class when they are absent.  Regardless of the reason for the absence, the student is expected to review the videos/text covering the missed material prior to the next class meeting, and to complete all work by assigned due dates.  

Full participation in class discussion and class work is expected and an important component of active learning.  Completing homework assignments on time, participating in-class activities, and attendance constitute participation in the course.  There are no makeup assignments for missed in-class activities. 

 

Dropping a course is the student's responsibility, but you MAY be dropped for non-participation in the course.  See Attendance Regulations in the North Central Texas College Catalog.

 

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

Homework and quizzes for each section must be submitted online. A Thinkwell subscription is required.  Homework assignments are due no later than Monday at 11:59 pm and quizzes are due by Tuesday at 11:59 pm. Studying and completing assignments consistently throughout the week is expected.

OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION

 

Homework

On-line homework is due each week on Monday at 11:59 p.m. Students may work from home or at student access computers on campus.  Homework assignments can be printed and worked away from the computer, though answers must be submitted online by the due date for full credit.  Students may be able to review homework questions after the due date has passed in Thinkwell Content.  Students should pace their homework/study schedule to manage their weekly workload.  It is highly recommended that homework be completed one each section to the next class meeting. Homework should be completed on paper in a designated homework notebook.

 

Quizzes

Weekly online quizzes should be completed by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesdays. Each attempt may generate different types of questions, so it is recommended that you go through each quiz a few times to prepare for differing question types. It is also recommended that you attempt quizzes without notes to practice test conditions.  The highest score out of all attempts will be counted. 

 

Offline Assignments

Offline assignments will be counted as quiz grades.  There may be up to 3 offline assignments.  A late offline assignments will be accepted if submitted by the next class meeting.  The score will be reduced by 20 percentage points.

 

Questions on the homework and quizzes will be discussed at the beginning of each class. Practice is absolutely necessary for successful progress in the course.

 

 

Tests

All tests will be paper and pencil tests.  You will be allowed to use a non-graphing calculator on the tests.  No late or make-up tests will be given. The final exam grade will replace the lowest test score, if it is higher.

 

To be courteous to your fellow classmates during tests.

All items (including cell phones) must be placed at the front of the classroom on test days, except your calculator and your writing utensils.  Please leave all valuables at home if you do not wish to put them at the front of the classroom.

 

You may be asked to surrender your test and leave the classroom for any disruptive behavior during a test on your first violation. You may be dropped from the course on your second violation.  

 

If a student leaves the classroom after receiving your test, your test period is over.  Take care of all personal needs before beginning your exam.    

 

Scratch paper for work will be available and, if used, must be submitted with your test.

 

If you arrive late to class on test day, you will have only the remaining class time finish the exam.

 

Communication

All written communication, including assignments, must include the student’s
first and last name along with the course and section for identification.  Appropriate punctuation, content and tone is expected. Examples: Jane Doe, Math 2412 or Jane Doe, Precalculus.

Canvas e-mail includes this information automatically. Questions on the homework and quizzes will be discussed at the beginning of each class.



The instructor reserves to amend the syllabus at any time, during the semester.  Any changes disseminated in class will supersede this document.
