Course Description (NCTC Catalog): Concepts of geometry, probability, and statistics, as well as applications of the algebraic properties of real numbers to concepts of measurement with an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking. This course is designed specifically for students who seek middle grade teacher certification.  However, this is not a pedagogy course.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Use charts and graphs to represent and interpret data;

Calculate descriptive statistics

Use systematic reasoning and counting techniques to find probabilities and expectations

Analyze characteristics and properties of 2- and 3-dimensional shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships;

Use transformations and symmetry to analyze congruence and similarity and to construct tessellations;

Perform unit conversions to translate between different measuring systems use transformations and symmetry to analyze congruence and similarity and to construct tessellations;

 

 

 

 

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION POLICY

 

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  Students are responsible for keeping up with what occurs in class when they are absent.  Regardless of the reason for the absence, the student is expected to review the material and concepts covering the missed material prior to the next class meeting, and to submit work by assigned due dates

 

Dropping a course is the student's responsibility, but you MAY be dropped for excessive absence. Each class is 3 hours and 10 minutes. Student missing more than 9 hours of class may be withdrawn from the course.

Full participation in class discussion and class work is expected and an important component of active learning. Participation is a component of your effort grade.  The effort grade includes reading assignments, notes, homework, in class activities (other than quizzes), and attendance.

Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is November 3, 2016.

 

OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION

 

Late classwork assignments will be accepted with 50% deduction if submitted on or before the Tuesday at 11:59 pm following the assignment date.  A zero grade will be assigned to classwork submitted after Tuesday.  No late homework or quiz will be accepted.

 

The final exam is comprehensive and may replace the lowest test score.

 

You may bring a 3 x 5 note card and a calculator to each exam.  However, you may be restricted from using one or both for portions of an exam.
