Course description:  Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

Course prerequisites:  Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent

Required course materials:  MyLab Statistics (e-text included in MyLab Statistics)
TI-30X IIS or TI 83-84 calculator is required
NOTE: Phone calculators will not be allowed on exams.
Optional course materials:  Fundamentals of Statistics: Informed Decisions Using Data 6th edition, Michael Sullivan III, 2022, Pearson

STUDENT HOURS (OFFICE HOURS)

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class, or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one.  Student hours may be held in-person or online.  See below for instructions on where/when/how instructors will offer student hours in this class.

MATH TUTORING LAB

Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance.  There are math tutors available on every campus and online.  This service is free for all students enrolled in an NCTC math class. Final grade scale:  90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

Grading and late work policy:

• All homework will be submitted on MyStatLab. Homework for the week is due by midnight before the start of the next school week. A 30% penalty will be deducted from late homework. You will receive 5 attempts per question.
• There will always be a quiz on the first day of the week unless a test is scheduled. Quizzes will be taken in class on MyStatLab. If you are absent the day of the quiz, you have till midnight on Friday of that week to complete it. You will receive 2 attempts.
• I will drop your lowest quiz grade.
• The final exam is a departmental comprehensive exam and must be taken by all students. The final exam may also be used to replace the lowest unit test grade.

COURSE POLICIES

 
Academic Integrity Policy:
Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion.  The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Code of Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.   
Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:
1. Zero on the assignment
2. Failing grade for the course

Attendance Policy:

Withdrawal Policy
A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

Last day to withdraw from a 16-week course with a “W” is: Monday, April 3, 2023

2. Recognize, examine, and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
3. Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of probabilities and combinatorics.
4. Explain the role of probability in statistics.
5. Examine, analyze, and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and continuous random variables.
6. Describe and compute confidence intervals.
7. Solve linear regression and correlation problems.
8. Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.
