Course description:  Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

 

Course prerequisites:  Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent

 

Required course materials:  Fundamentals of Statistics: Informed Decisions Using Data 6th edition, Michael Sullivan III, 2022, Pearson

  • MyLab Statistics (e-text included in MyLab Statistics)
  • TI-30X IIS or TI 83-84 calculator is required (any calculator that contains statistics calculations and data input)

STUDENT HOURS (OFFICE HOURS)

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class, or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one.  Student hours may be held in-person or online.  See below for instructions on where/when/how instructors will offer student hours in this class.

 

All office hours are listed above on the Corinth Campus, or virtually according to the day and time. Students are welcome to come by my office during those times listed above. Students are encouraged to send an email to verify the time, date and location, or to remind me that they are coming to my office. A brief explanation about the topic that the student is needing help with will help the instructor prepare for the meeting.

Final grade scale:  89.5 – 100% = A;   79.5 – 89.4% = B; 69.5 – 79.4% = C;  59.5 – 69.4% = D;  Below 59.4% = F

Homework:  All homework assignments are to be completed on the computer using MyMathLab (MML). Homework is an important component in student success for this course. Homework reinforces the topics from each section. Homework assignments in MML will have unlimited number of attempts and the highest score will be recorded.

 

Quizzes: Quizzes are assigned using MyMathLab. Students will have three attempts for each online quiz. Some quizzes may have time limits. The highest score will be recorded. 

 

Late work policy:  Homework and quizzes may be worked past the original due date with a 30% penalty up until the test for that section. There is no need to ask the instructor to modify due dates because of this policy.

 

Projects:  There are 4 projects that are found in CANVAS or MyMathLab as part of the overall grade. Further instructions are in Canvas.

 

Tests: Four tests will be given according to the tentative calendar (See calendar located in CANVAS).  These are paper and pencil exams in the classroom. There is only one attempt on a test and it is timed. There are NO Makeup exams.

 

Final Exam: The final exam is a comprehensive departmental exam and required of all students. The final exam will be a paper/pencil test taken in class. There is a time limit and only one attempt. See final exam schedule on the NCTC web page.

      There are NO makeup finals.

 

 

The final exam may also be used to replace the lowest unit test grade only by student qualification. A student may qualifications for the final exam to replace one low test grade if all MML Homework and Quiz assignments are complete (with a score of at least 60%).

COURSE POLICIES

 

 

Academic Integrity Policy:

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion.  The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Code of Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.  

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

  1. Zero on the assignment
  2. Failing grade for the course

 

 

Attendance Policy:

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered. All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies. It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member. Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences. The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence. Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work. Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless the absence is documented and excused by the instructor. Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. Withdrawal Policy

A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

 

Last day to withdraw from the course with a “W” is: (16-wk) Monday, April 4, 2022
