COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR MATH 1342 (NCTC CATALOG): Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the use of data collection & statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
  2. Recognize, examine &interpret the basic principles of describing &presenting data
  3. Compute & interpret empirical & theoretical probabilities using the rules of probabilities &combinatorics.
  4. Explain the role of probability in statistics
  5. Examine, analyze & compare various sampling distributions for both discrete & continuous random variables.
  6. Describe & compute confidence intervals
  7. Solve linear regression & correlation problems
  8. Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods

COURSE PREREQUISITE(S): Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent.

RECOMMENDED COURSE MATERIALS:  TI-36X PRO, TI-83, or TI-84 are highly recommended.

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class, or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one.

All office hours will be held online this semester.  Students can schedule an appointment with their instructor by selecting the Cisco Webex option in Canvas and navigating to the “Office Hour” tab.  The times that the instructor is available will be displayed there and a student may schedule a meeting by choosing a time and selecting “Confirm Meeting” at the bottom of the page.

This page is important!  Yes, it’s long, and A LOT of words, but please read it!

 

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS AND QUIZZES

Homework and quizzes will be assigned for all sections and will be completed in MyLab Math, an online homework and course management system.  Each homework assignment will begin with a video lecture, which must be watched as a part of the assignment.  These videos will serve as the lecture/instruction for this course.  There will be no synchronous/live/video lectures with Ms Kelley, but there are plenty of opportunities to meet with her through WebEx for one-on-one instruction during office hours.

 

Homework and Quizzes will be due weekly, on Saturday evenings at 11pm. You have an unlimited number of attempts for each homework problem, but 5 attempts for each quiz, and 1 attempt for each test.  Extensions will not be given for any reason, including technical difficulties, but you may complete the assignments late with a 25% deduction in grade. Please have an alternative plan for completing assignments should your computer fail, such as going to a public library.

 

Other supplemental materials are also available in the homework system to help, such as animations, applets, an etext, etc.  You will need to register for this ASAP, and may use a free two-week trial to do so. If you have any questions about the registration process detailed in the last page of this syllabus, please feel free to email me and let me know.  Your free trial expiring will not excuse you from any assignment due dates.  Please make sure to purchase full access to the homework before letting your free trial expire.

 

TESTS

Tests will be given online during a 24 hour testing window, with one single attempt, and timed-forced completion (meaning, when time is up, your test is automatically submitted).  Extensive handwritten work submissions, in PDF form, will be required to be uploaded immediately in Canvas assignment location following each test and weigh heavily in the grading of the overall exam.

You must provide handwritten work for every question supporting the mathematics used to reach your solution, even when a calculator was used – make note of both the calculator steps & write out the results from the calculator process.  If your work does not support the answer that you selected on the exam, points will be deducted from the exam for 'guessing'.  In other word, no credit for correctly guessing if you cannot mathematically support your answer choice.  If you do not submit your written work, or if it is not submitted on time, you will receive a 0 on your test.

No make-up tests will be given after the test availability closes.  The Final Exam score counts for itself, but can also be used to replace one missing or low test score - however, nothing will replace the final exam score.

Students can test early (prior to our scheduled test date block) if you know in advance of an absence and can provide proof for reasoning of absence.  If you need to take the test early, you will need the instructor's permission first.  

Feedback on tests will be provided either directly in the comments of the Canvas gradebook, or through a feedback document that is posted in the Canvas gradebook.  Scores and feedback will not be posted until all students have taken the exam.

 

ASSIGNMENT DUE DATES

You may work at your own pace in this course, going as fast as you’d like, as long as you meet the due dates detailed below.  It is not recommended that you attempt to finish the course as quickly as possible, as this is already a VERY fast moving course, but if you’d like to work ahead, the course is designed for you to be able to do so.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance will be based on your timely completion of the course assignments and meetings with Ms Kelley. There will be 16 attendance marks to hit throughout the course.  To hit each mark and be counted as "Present", you simply have to complete the majority of the assignments in each group by their due date.  Failure to complete a majority of the assignment will result in you being marked as "Absent".  The attendance marks can be found in Canvas.

NCTC ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies.  It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member.  Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences.  The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence.  Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work.  Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless the absence is documented and excused by the instructor.  Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives.    Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. STEPS TO REGISTER FOR MyLab Math

  1. On a laptop or desktop computer (Do Not use a phone or tablet) use the Google Chrome browser to get to Canvas.  (Browsers other than Chrome often have difficulties with our homework system.  Quite often, if you’re having an issue with the homework, simply switching to Chrome will fix the issue.)

 

  1. In Canvas, select the tab on the left that says Courses, and select our course MATH 1325.0320

 

  1. Select the tab in the menu on the left of our course that says Modules

 

  1. Scroll down to the Homework Information module and select the tab that says "Click Here To Get To Your Homework"...click the link in that tab.

 

  1. You should see an "End-User License Agreement and Privacy Policy", scroll down and select "I Agree" (This page may be missing if you've already agreed to the policy.)

 

  1. This should be a page with two options, "Sign in with a Pearson account" or "Create a Pearson account".  If you do not already have an account, you should create a new account using your NCTC email address and your NCTC username.  Also, do not use your full email address as your username, just the beginning of it (the same one you would use to login to a computer on campus)…your username should not have @nctc.edu in it.

 

 

  1. What you should see next are a few options to purchase access into the course. There is a place to type in an access code, and if you've bought one from the bookstore that's what you'll do. There is a place to purchase instant access using a credit card, with two different options for just access to the homework, or access to the homework and an electronic copy of the textbook. Lastly, towards the bottom, there is a link for a free 14 day trial. Choose which one you'd like, and that should be it.

 

If for some reason any of this doesn't work, please tell me which steps you were able to complete, which steps you got stuck on, and tell me the error message you received when you got stuck (you can even take a screen shot).

 

 

COVID Related Addendum

 

Syllabi statement regarding potential Conversion of Onsite Classes to Online/Remote Format: North Central Texas College students should be aware that in the event of a college closure due to COVID-19 or other health related crisis, onsite classes will be converted to an online/remote format. Students should plan ahead to ensure they have access to the computer equipment (either PC, MAC, or tablet), webcam, and internet connectivity to continue their classes in an online/remote format. Please read all your official North Central Texas College student emails as the transition from onsite to online/remote might require a reorganization in your personal situation. Students will be granted a 72-hour transition and grace period. Online classes will continue as scheduled without disruption. Contact your Instructor as the situation arises. These policies and procedures were updated on July 27, 2021 and are subject to change as conditions change.

 

Syllabi Statement Regarding Face Coverings: Per the North Central Texas College guidance on face coverings on campus, in the instructional setting, faculty and students are not required to wear face coverings, such as masks or face shields. In May, Texas Governor Gregg Abbott released an Executive Order prohibiting Government entities from mandating the use of masks. As a political subdivision of the State of Texas, NCTC will follow the Governor’s Executive Order for Government entities and effective immediately NCTC is no longer mandating the use of masks while on campus. This order does not mean that you cannot choose to wear a mask, rather it is no longer allowed to be mandated. These policies and procedures were updated on May 19, 2021 and are subject to change.

 

Return to Standard Attendance Protocol for Face-to-Face Meetings: In spring 2020, we faced an unprecedented situation in which all of us had to be flexible and make prudent decisions in the best interest of our families, our campus, and our community. In light of this, North Central Texas College is temporarily establishing the requirement that faculty keep records of student attendance for face-to-face course meetings as well as a documented seating chart. In addition, students who are sick or need to quarantine should not attend classes. Students will not be required to provide formal documentation from a health care provider and will not be penalized for COVID-19 related absences when proper notification to campus health officials is made in accordance with the guidelines stated below.

 

Faculty will:

  • Notify students about important course information and delivery changes through Canvas and campus email.

 

Students should:

  • Provide notification to campus officials if they have tested positive for COVID-19 or have to quarantine so we can confirm reported absence with instructors, monitor, and assist the campus community.
  • Notify instructors in advance of the absence.
  • Connect with that class through Webex if the class session is being transmitted in a hybrid fashion.
  • Keep up with and/or make up missed classwork or assignments.
  • Submit assignments digitally through Canvas or other means as announced by your instructor.
  • Work with their instructors to reschedule exams, labs, and other critical academic activities described in the course syllabus.
  • Check Canvas and campus email daily to receive important announcements pertaining to the course.

 

During the Fall 2021 semester, faculty with face-to-face meetings will establish assigned seating/work stations to facilitate roll-taking, and, if necessary, contact tracing. Additionally, we ask all members of the College community to be attentive to their health, and safeguard others, by following the CDC’s guideline to “stay home when you are sick.” You should stay home if you have symptoms.
