Course Description for MATH 1342 (NCTC Catalog): Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

Course Description for NCBM 0142 (NCTC Catalog): The NCBO supports students in developing skills, strategies, and reasoning needed to succeed in mathematics, including communication and appropriate use of technology. Topics include the study of numeracy and the real number system; algebraic concepts, notation, and reasoning; quantitative relationships; mathematical models; and problem solving. This course does not count toward graduation at NCTC.

Course Prerequisite(s): Pass Math 0305 with a “C” or better, or earn satisfactory TSI Assessment placement score, or earn satisfactory placement score on another approved assessment.

DOWNLOAD the WebEx App – This is a MUST!

  • Select & install the Cisco WebEx App on your laptop and phone.  Both will be very useful and helpful.
  • Once installed, Sign In with your NCTC credentials:  student email  (EX:  BHUMBLE@student.nctc.edu) .  This will connect your Canvas course and the WebEx account.  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT --  THE EMAIL MUST MATCH!!
  • Now, you should be able to see a current list of meetings that have been scheduled.  TO JOIN A WEBEX CLASSROOM, simply press 'JOIN' at the stated date and time.

STUDENT EMAIL

All students at NCTC are assigned a student email address, also known as Lion Pride email. Lion Pride email can be accessed on the NCTC home page by clicking on MyNCTC, then the link “Lion Pride Email” to the left. After clicking the Lion Pride Email link, the Microsoft Office 365 window will open.
1. Enter your NCTC student e-mail address. (for example, Smithj123456@student.nctc.edu)

2. Enter your password (your NCTC Student ID Number, either 7 or 9 numbers).

3. From the list of Microsoft icons, choose MAIL.

4. You will be asked to set your language and local time zone (Central Time). Your account is now activated.

TSI COMPLIANCE

At North Central Texas College, students who test but do not meet the passing scores in ALL sections of the TSI Assessment or any other THECB approved testing measurements are required by state law to obtain TSI advising and continuously enroll in a formal college preparatory studies (developmental) program every semester until all TSI requirements are satisfied. TSI program attendance is MANDATORY. Non-compliance with the rules of attendance can result in a student being WITHDRAWN from the college preparatory and college-level math courses. Withdrawals are subject to college policies as set forth in the college catalog.

 

TESTING POLICY

Testing may be administered in a variety of ways and the mode of testing may change during the semester as deemed appropriate by the instructor.  When possible, in-person proctored testing is preferred.  For in-person classes testing will occur during the designated class timesFor online classes in-person proctored testing may be required.  On site testing may be done in an NCTC testing center, at test locations provided by the math division, or at another authorized testing site.  If online testing is used students may be required to use a webcam while testing.  For online testing students will be required to scan and upload supporting documents.  Regardless of modality, testing is not a group activity but a measurement of an individual student’s mastery of the course conceptsAcademic honesty is implied and expected! (Refer to definition of Academic Dishonesty according to the Student Handbook below).  Students may be asked to demonstrate knowledge/skills in a one-on-one conference if deemed necessary by the instructor. 

 

This course will be testing online and provided a testing window as mentioned in the Exam Schedule below.  Make note of these dates.  NO MAKEUP EXAMS WILL BE ALLOWED.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered. All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies. It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member. Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences. The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence. Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work. Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless the absence is documented and excused by the instructor. Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. Attendance (graded): Credit will be earned by attending WebEx Classroom sessions – Monday/Wednesday starting at 11:00AM.  No partial credit can be earned in this assignment group.

*You will be considered ‘absent’ if you do not attend each WebEx Classroom session as scheduled or fail to stay logged in to the session until dismissed by the instructor.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

 

REQUIRED PURCHASE:

Pearson MYSTATLAB (MSL Access Code):  every student must purchase and register a Pearson MyStatLab subscription access code from the NCTC Bookstore or inside the Canvas course when it opens.  MyStatLab is used to deliver homework, quizzes and exams throughout the semester.

 

MyStatLab (MSL) will provide you access to the E-textbook, multimedia resources, homework help resources, needed for this course.  All graded content assignments will be completed online through Canvas in MyStatLab (MSL). You will need an access code that can be purchased in the bookstore or online after you click the Canvas link for MyLab & Mastering. Read the module posted in Canvas named: ‘Pearson Resources: Register & Setup Pearson’s MyLab & Mastering’.

 

STEPS TO REGISTER FOR MyLab Statistics

1. On a laptop or desktop computer (Do Not use a phone or tablet) use the Google Chrome browser or Firefox browser to get to Canvas. (Browsers other than Chrome and Firefox often have difficulties with our homework system. Quite often, if you’re having an issue with the homework, simply switching to Chrome will fix the issue.)

2. In Canvas, select the tab on the left that says Courses, and select our course MATH 1342

3. Select the tab in the left menu of our course that says MyLab & Mastering

4. Click on the YELLOW highlighted bar “Open MyLab & Mastering” beside the textbook icon.

5. You should see an "End-User License Agreement and Privacy Policy", scroll down and select "I Agree" (This page may be missing if you've already agreed to the policy.)

6. This should be a page with two options, "Sign in with a Pearson account" or "Create a Pearson account". If you do not already have an account, you should create a new account using your NCTC email address and your NCTC username. Also, do not use your full email address as your username, just the beginning of it (the same one you would use to login to a computer on campus)…your username should not have @student.nctc.edu in it.

7. What you should see next are a few options to purchase access into the course.

OPTION 1: Enter a purchased access code (if you have already purchased from the NCTC Bookstore or from an outside source.

OPTION 2: Purchase an instant access using a credit card, with two different options for just access to the homework, or access to the homework and an electronic copy of the textbook.

OPTION 3: Use a 14-day FREE Trial towards the bottom (in small print).  If you choose this option, make note of the date in which your free usage will expire – you will need to purchase to return to your saved course work.  This option is not advisable if you are using financial aid.

** If you are utilizing Financial Aid, you can purchase directly from the NCTC Bookstore and use Financial Aid at checkout BEFORE Sept 1, 2021.  After Sept 1 this option is no longer available and you will be expected to pay out of pocket.  Please make certain you understand the Instructions to retrieve your Pearson Access code when purchasing from the NCTC Bookstore. **

Learning New Content:

You are expected to watch all section video presentations in the MyStatLab multimedia library. These videos can be accessed from the Chapter Contents menu or in the assignments list in MSL. This provides additional support in a traditional course. If you do not have a high-speed Internet connection, it may be difficult to view the videos. The videos contain instruction on each objective that is to be covered in the course. If you don’t watch the videos, it will make the HW difficult to complete. There is also a power point presentation for each section.  In addition to the videos provided by MyStatLab, your instructor may post videos to give an overview of more difficult material you will be learning. 

 

Homework in MyStatLab:

All due dates are listed in MSL and are intended to keep you in pace with the course and the testing schedule. You can complete the assignments until 11:59 pm of the due date listed. The homework may be attempted unlimited times in order to increase your homework grade. You may return to improve homework grades after the listed due date, but any changes made to homework after the listed due date may receive a penalty.  Missing or un-attempted homework units will receive a zero.

 

Need homework help?  You have several options:

A) MyStatLab offers guided question help resources such as View an Example, watch a video, View the Textbook,

B) Visit the Student Success Center for FREE TUTORING options,

C) attend/participate in a regularly scheduled WebEx Classroom session with your instructor,

D) send your instructor the homework question using ‘ASK My Instructor’ feature in MyStatLab Homework Help,

E) make an appointment during the stated Student Office Hours. 

Any of these options will get you a starting place for assistance.  The important part is ASKING and NOT WAITING!

 

Quiz Policies in MyStatLab:

Five quizzes are scheduled during the semester:  Quiz 1 (Ch 1-3), Quiz 2 (Ch 4-5), Quiz 3 (Ch 6-8), Quiz 4 (Ch 9-10), and Quiz 5 (Review for the final exam).  Each Quiz is timed and includes 3 attempts to maximize your best score.  The purpose of the timer on the quiz is to help prepare you for the time constraints of each exam.  Running out of time could also be an indicator to review and seek guidance on concepts that slowed you down.

 

Exam Policies  (MyStatLab & Canvas):

Exams are not group activities but a measurement of an individual student’s mastery of the course conceptsAcademic honesty is implied and expected! (Refer to definition of Academic Dishonesty according to the Student Handbook below)

Two Unit exams (named Exam 1 and Exam 2) are scheduled during the semester: Exam 1 (Ch 1-5) and Exam 2 (Ch 6-10) as well as one comprehensive final exam covering Chapters 1-10. Make sure to follow the deadline dates listed in Canvas.

The exams will be given online with restricted dates (24 hour testing window), single attempts, and timed-forced completion. Extensive handwritten work submissions, in PDF form, will be required to be uploaded immediately in a Canvas assignment location following each exam and weigh heavily on the grading of the overall exam. Students will be allowed to prepare a one-page handwritten memory enhancer (front & back) for each exam as well as use a battery-operated, course approved calculator.

No make-up exams will be given after the exam availability closes. The final exam score counts for itself but can also be used to replace one missing or low unit exam score – nothing replaces the final exam score.

Students can test early (prior to our scheduled exam date block) if you know in advance of an absence and can provide proof for reasoning of absence. If you need to take the exam early, please get the instructor’s permission FIRST, so as to set a date/time prior to the scheduled exam date. 

Feedback will be provided either directly in the comments of the Canvas gradebook or through a feedback document that is posted in the Canvas gradebook.  Scores and feedback will not be published until all students have taken the exam. 

Students have 48 hours, after the return of each exam/feedback/comments, to contact the instructor by email with questions on grading.  After that point, the student forfeits the opportunity to contest an exam grade.

               

Gradebook in Canvas (official course grade):

The gradebook in Canvas and Pearson's MyStatLab are sync’d and refreshed approximately every 12 hours to give you the most current end of course grade standing possible for completed assignments. Do not panic if the grade book does not instantly reflect your new homework score – it will be updated when the system cycles.  Keep in mind that any assignment that has not been attempted will receive a zero at the end of the semester.

 

How to Check your progress grade:

Canvas has a "what-if" function in the student grade book that will allow a student to temporarily plan future max/min scores on published assignments to see the impact on the end of course grade. (this function is not available in the Canvas app)

The grading policy laid out in this document may be amended during the semester at the instructor’s discretion.  Students will be notified in advance of any amendments to grading policy through an Announcement or Canvas message.

Syllabi statement regarding potential Conversion of Onsite Classes to Online/Remote Format: North Central Texas College students should be aware that in the event of a college closure due to COVID-19 or other health related crisis, onsite classes will be converted to an online/remote format. Syllabi Statement Regarding Face Coverings: Per the North Central Texas College guidance on face coverings on campus, in the instructional setting, faculty and students are not required to wear face coverings, such as masks or face shields. In May, Texas Governor Gregg Abbott released an Executive Order prohibiting Government entities from mandating the use of masks. As a political subdivision of the State of Texas, NCTC will follow the Governor’s Executive Order for Government entities and effective immediately NCTC is no longer mandating the use of masks while on campus. This order does not mean that you cannot choose to wear a mask, rather it is no longer allowed to be mandated. These policies and procedures were updated on May 19, 2021 and are subject to change.

 

Return to Standard Attendance Protocol for Face-to-Face Meetings: In spring 2020, we faced an unprecedented situation in which all of us had to be flexible and make prudent decisions in the best interest of our families, our campus, and our community. In light of this, North Central Texas College is temporarily establishing the requirement that faculty keep records of student attendance for face-to-face course meetings as well as a documented seating chart. In addition, students who are sick or need to quarantine should not attend classes. Students will not be required to provide formal documentation from a health care provider and will not be penalized for COVID-19 related absences when proper notification to campus health officials is made in accordance with the guidelines stated below.

 

Faculty will:

 

  • Notify students about important course information and delivery changes through Canvas and campus email.

 

Students should:

  • Provide notification to campus officials if they have tested positive for COVID-19 or have to quarantine so we can confirm reported absence with instructors, monitor, and assist the campus community.
  • Notify instructors in advance of the absence.
  • Connect with that class through Webex if the class session is being transmitted in a hybrid fashion.
  • Keep up with and/or make up missed classwork or assignments.
  • Submit assignments digitally through Canvas or other means as announced by your instructor.
  • Work with their instructors to reschedule exams, labs, and other critical academic activities described in the course syllabus.
  • Check Canvas and campus email daily to receive important announcements pertaining to the course.

During the fall 2021 semester, faculty with face-to-face meetings will establish assigned seating/work stations to facilitate roll-taking, and, if necessary, contact tracing. Additionally, we ask all members of the College community to be attentive to their health, and safeguard others, by following the CDC’s guideline to “stay home when you are sick.” You should stay home if you have symptoms. CAMPUS POLICIES

Tobacco-Free Campus:  NCTC restricts the use of all tobacco products, including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and smokeless tobacco, on campus property.

 

Campus Carry: Effective August 1, 2017, a license holder may carry a concealed handgun on or about the license holder's person while the license holder is on the campus of an institution of higher education or private or independent institution of higher education in this state. Parking Permits: The North Central Texas Community College District has managed traffic and parking regulations in order to ensure the safety of the campus community related to the operation and parking of vehicles on campus.
