COURSE COMPONENTS

Class Notes:  I have made PowerPoint notes for each chapter, and posted them on Canvas in two formats.  The first is a pdf format with 4 slides to a page.  The second is the original PowerPoint format.  You need to have these notes in front of you during lecture.  Either print them out and bring to class, or bring your laptop.

Practice homework is something you need to be working on continuously outside of class.  All practice homework sections will have due dates.  The due date is more of a formality, however, as you can work on the problems at any time.  Do as much as you feel you need to do to learn the material.  This is on you----practice homework grades do not count in your overall grade.   They are for learning.  If you do not do it, you might not learn the material well enough to pass the class.

Video assignments will be due on Tuesday evenings.  They show examples of the material we are working on.  It is a very good idea to view them before the lecture, but you may watch them at any time.  Again, this is your responsibility.  The grade is not counted in your overall grade.  You do this to help you learn the material.

Online quizzes will be due on either Sunday or Tuesday evenings.  These do count as part of your overall grade.   This is an exact due date.  You may not work on the quizzes after they are due.  They are online through MyLab, and you will do them outside of class.  You will have 5 attempts to do each online quiz, and the highest grade of all attempts is recorded.   Even though they are due on Monday, you must work on them before then.   If you wait until Monday, you will not have enough time to do all the attempts.

Group quizzes are done in class in groups.  We will have group work on most Tuesdays and Thursdays, except for the first week and test weeks.  Groups will be assigned, and may be changed weekly.  While you are expected to work together to do the quiz, each student will hand in their own assignment.  You must be in class to do to this type of quiz.

Two quiz grades (online or group) will be dropped at the end of the semester.

Excel assignments will be due by midnight on specific Fridays (due dates on the calendar in Canvas).    Assignments are posted in Canvas, and you may also need to go to MyLab Stats for data sets and an Excel manual.    Read the Excel guidelines (also posted in Canvas) for information on finding the data sets, finding the Excel manual, handing in your assignment, etc.  No late assignments will be accepted.

Exams will be given in class.   The schedule is below.  You may bring in a 3X5 notecard to each exam with formulas, examples, definitions, etc. on it.  You are expected to be in class for the exams.  If you are unable to be there, you must notify the instructor on or before the scheduled day.  Then a make-up can be discussed.  If you do not notify the instructor or are unable to take it before the test is handed back to the class, you may not take it.  Contact the instructor for alternatives.

Exam Schedule

Exam #1:  Thursday, September 12

Exam #2:  Tuesday, October 1

Exam #3: Thursday, October 17

Exam #4:  Tuesday, November 5

Exam #5:  Thursday, November 21

Final Exam:  Week of December 9 (this will be updated when NCTC posts the final exam schedule for Fall 2019).

Test Revisions:  You may choose one of the 4 exams (not the final) that you have taken, and both re-do and explain how to do any problem you missed points on.  You can get back up to half the points you missed.  See Canvas Modules for more specific instructions on what to do for the revisions.

Any changes to the syllabus will be announced in class.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR

Please do not talk to classmates while the instructor is lecturing.  You may ask questions of the instructor at any time.

Please do not leave the classroom during lecture.  It is distracting to others

Please do not be on your cell phones during lectures.  Ideally, they should be on silent and out of sight

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (From Academic Course Guide Manual/Workforce Education Course Manual/NCTC Catalog)

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1

Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.

2

Recognize, examine, and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.

3

Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of probabilities and combinatorics.

4

Explain the role of probability in statistics.

5

Examine, analyze, and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and continuous random variables.

6

Describe and compute confidence intervals.

7

Solve linear regression and correlation problems.

8

Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.

STUDENT EMAIL

All students at NCTC are assigned a student email address, also known as Lion Pride email. Lion Pride email can be accessed on the NCTC home page by clicking on MyNCTC, then the link “Lion Pride Email” to the left. After clicking the Lion Pride Email link, the Microsoft Office 365 window will open.
1. Enter your NCTC student e-mail address. (for example, Smithj123456@student.nctc.edu)

2. Enter your password (your NCTC Student ID Number, either 7 or 9 numbers).

3. From the list of Microsoft icons, choose MAIL.

4. You will be asked to set your language and local time zone (Central Time). Your account is now activated.

**It is the student’s responsibility to activate and regularly monitor the assigned NCTC (Lion Pride) e-mail account. Important announcements and notifications from the Admissions office, Financial Aid, or other college staff will be sent via the Lion Pride student email system.

For communicating with classmates and instructors, students also have an option to communicate through Canvas. Canvas messaging is NOT the same as Lion Pride e-mail. Failure to read and/or receive NCTC e-mails (either in Lion Pride or in Canvas) is no excuse for not complying with any school policy. Be sure to regularly check BOTH the Lion Pride email as well as the Canvas inbox for important messages and information.

TSI COMPLIANCE

At North Central Texas College, students who test but do not meet the passing scores in ALL sections of the TSI Assessment or any other THECB approved testing measurements are required by state law to obtain TSI advising and continuously enroll in a formal college preparatory studies (developmental) program every semester until all TSI requirements are satisfied. TSI program attendance is MANDATORY. Non-compliance with the rules of attendance can result in a student being WITHDRAWN from the college preparatory and college-level math courses. Withdrawals are subject to college policies as set forth in the college catalog.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  Valid reasons for absence do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work.

If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to get the notes from another student, and look at the material in MyLab Stats to learn what you missed.

I do not drop students for absences.   If you want to drop the class, you must do so yourself before the drop date.

LAST DAY TO WITHDRAW

Last day to withdraw from a 16-week course with a “W” is Friday, November 1, 2019.
