Course Description (NCTC Catalog): Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.          

Course Prerequisite(s): Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent

Required MyStatLab Access Code Fundamentals of Statistics: Informed Decisions Using Data 5th edition, Michael Sullivan III, 2018, Pearson.

Scientific calculator (TI-30X IIS or TI 83/84 are recommended)

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

 

Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.

Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and

presenting data.

Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of probabilities and combinatorics.

Explain the role of probability in statistics.

Examine, analyze and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and continuous random variables.

Describe and compute confidence intervals.

Solve linear regression and correlation problems.

Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.

Grade Scale:   90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C; 60 – 69% = D; Below 60% = F

 

Weeks are considered to be Tuesday-Monday.   All online assignments are due by 11:59pm on their scheduled due date.  To fully understand the material you are encouraged to create a schedule to work on assignments on a regular basis throughout the week.  You may work ahead in any open module.

 

Participation:  Consideration towards participation is awarded for the perceived effort placed in the course. Consideration is given for asking and answering questions on the Get Help Forum, participation on topic discussion boards and timely completion of assignments. 

Projects:  The Stat Crunch program is a statistical program that facilitates the analysis of large data sets, and access to StatCrunch is included with MyStatLab.  It will be utilized for completion of two projects during the semester, as well as on homework with larger data sets. Instructions for completing each project will be given in Canvas.  See the StatCrunch module in Canvas for more information on StatCrunch.

Homework and Quizzes: Each week there will be section homework and an online quiz.  The last day to submit these will due on Monday. You will have three attempts and 1 hour 15 minutes for each online quiz attempt.  If your quiz is interrupted/disconnected, you will need to begin again using another attempt.   I will keep the highest score.

Exams: The exams will be proctored in a classroom on Saturdays during weeks 5, 9, 12, and 15.  The Final Exam is comprehensive and required for all students.  There are no makeup exams.  However, you may schedule your exam to be taken during the testing windows prior to the in-class tests and the final exam score may be used to replace a missed exam or your lowest test score.  All exams are paper and pencil, proctored exams.  See the Tests Document in the Resources module in Canvas for more information about alternate dates and locations for exams.  

The instructor reserves the right to amend or update the syllabus at any time.  Any amendments made by your instructor will be announced in Canvas and will supersede this document.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered including online classes.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to extended illness or emergencies.  It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member.  Approved college-sponsored activities are excused absences.  The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence.  Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for required work.  Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence.  Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives or fails to complete orientation.    Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. LAST DAY TO WITHDRAW

Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is Thursday, November 9, 2017.
