Catalog Description

Prerequisite:  Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent  48 lecture hours………………………………………………3 credit hours

Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

 

Textbook & Materials Required/ Recommended

Fundamentals of Statistics Informed Decisions using Data 4th Edition Michael Sullivan (A physical copy of the text book is not required)

MyMathLab Access Required (See Course Homepage for instructions)

Calculator with statistical capability (TI-30X IIS / TI 83-84 or equivalent)

Computer Access with Microsoft Excel

 

Learning Outcomes

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
  • Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
  • Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of

      probabilities and combinatorics.

  • Explain the role of probability in statistics.
  • Examine, analyze and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and continuous random variables.
  • Describe and compute confidence intervals.
  • Solve linear regression and correlation problems.
  • Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.

Attendance Policy

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  Students are responsible for keeping up with what occurs in class when they are absent.  Dropping a course is the student's responsibility, but you MAY be dropped for excessive absence.  See Attendance Regulations in the North Central Texas College Catalog.

 

 

Grading Policy & Procedures

Homework (MyStatLab) – 10%

Quizzes (MyStatLab) – 5%

Excel Assignments (Canvas) – 25%

Tests (In Class) – 40% (4 tests @ 10% each)

Final Exam (In Class) – 20%

 

The lowest regular test grade will be replaced by final exam grade if beneficial.  The final exam will not be dropped.  At the end of the semester two homework assignments and one quiz grade will be dropped.  Due dates can be found on MyStatLab.
