Course Description (NCTC Catalog):  Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

Course Prerequisite(s): Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent

Required or Recommended Course Materials: Required:  Registration in MyStatLab, a scientific calculator (TI-30X IIS recommended), and access to Excel

Optional:  The textbook is Fundamentals of Statistics Informed Decisions using Data, 4th Edition, Michael Sullivan, III ISBN #9780321839039.  However, the ebook is included in MyStatLab, so only buy the textbook if you want it.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.

Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.

Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of

probabilities and combinatorics.

Explain the role of probability in statistics.

5

Examine, analyze and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and

continuous random variables.

Describe and compute confidence intervals.

7

Solve linear regression and correlation problems.

8

Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular attendance is expected, but is not part of a student’s grade.  If the student misses a test day, the instructor must be notified on or before that day.

Students are responsible for dropping the class if needed.  This instructor will not drop you if you stop coming to class.

 

 

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

Due dates for quizzes and Excel assignments will be on the calendar in Canvas.  Quizzes are taken online through MyStatLab, and Excel assignments are uploaded into Canvas.   Quizzes will be due weekly, and there will be 4 Excel assignments throughout the semester.

 

Exams are given in class.  The dates for the exams are below.

 

Tentative Exam Dates:

Exam #1:  Friday, September 9

Exam #2:  Wednesday, September 28

Exam #3:  Friday, October 14

Exam #4:  Wednesday, November 2

Exam #5:  Friday, November 18

Final Exam:  Monday, December 5    (The final is comprehensive)

 

 

Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is November 14, 2016.
