Catalog Description

Prerequisite:  Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent  48 lecture hours………………………………………………3 credit hours

Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

Textbook & Materials Required/ Recommended

Required: Registration in MyStatLab

TI-30X IIS or TI 83-84 calculator is required

Computer Access with Microsoft Excel

Optional: Fundamentals of Statistics Informed Decisions using Data 4th Edition Michael Sullivan (this is the textbook: the ebook is included in MyStatLab.

Learning Outcomes

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

• Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
• Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
• Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of

      probabilities and combinatorics.

• Explain the role of probability in statistics.
• Examine, analyze and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and continuous random variables.
• Describe and compute confidence intervals.
• Solve linear regression and correlation problems.
• Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.

Attendance Policy

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  Students are responsible for keeping up with what occurs in class when they are absent.  Dropping a course is the student's responsibility, but you MAY be dropped for excessive absence.  See Attendance Regulations in the North Central Texas College Catalog.

Grades will be based on Excel assignments, quizzes through MyStatLab (online), and exams. 

Tentative Test Schedule

Exam 1:  Friday, September9

Exam 2:  Wednesday,September 26

Exam 3:  Friday, October 14

Exam 4:  Wednesday, October 28

Exam 5: Friday, November 11

Final exam (comprehensive):  Wednesday, December 7 (8:00am-9:50am)

Exams will be given in class.  There are no make-up exams.  If you know you’ll have a conflict on an exam date, and you let the instructor know at least one week before the exam, we’ll will try to make arrangements for you to take an exam before the scheduled date.

You may have a 3X5 notecard to put formulas, etc. on for exams 1 – 4, and a full sheet of paper for the final exam. 

Other Pertinent Information

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  Absence does not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work.  If you must miss a class, make sure you get notes from another student.  I would also recommend looking at the supplementary materials (videos, notes) in MyStatLab for the sections you missed.
