Course Description for MATH 1332 (NCTC Catalog): Intended for Non STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors. Topics include introductory treatments of sets and logic, financial mathematics, probability and statistics with appropriate applications. Number sense, proportional reasoning, estimation, technology, and communication should be embedded throughout the course. Additional topics may be covered.
Course Description for NCBM 0232 (NCTC Catalog): The NCBO supports students in developing skills, strategies, and reasoning needed to succeed in mathematics, including communication and appropriate use of technology. Topics include the study of numeracy and the real number system; algebraic concepts, notation, and reasoning; quantitative relationships; mathematical models; and problem solving. This course does not count toward graduation at NCTC.

All students at NCTC are assigned a student email address, also known as Lion Pride email. Lion Pride email can be accessed on the NCTC home page by clicking on MyNCTC, then the link “Lion Pride Email” to the left. After clicking the Lion Pride Email link, the Microsoft Office 365 window will open.
1. Enter your NCTC student e-mail address. (for example, Smithj123456@student.nctc.edu)
2. Enter your password (your NCTC Student ID Number, either 7 or 9 numbers).
3. From the list of Microsoft icons, choose MAIL.
4. You will be asked to set your language and local time zone (Central Time). Your account is now activated.
**It is the student’s responsibility to activate and regularly monitor the assigned NCTC (Lion Pride) e-mail account. Important announcements and notifications from the Admissions office, Financial Aid, or other college staff will be sent via the Lion Pride student email system.
For communicating with classmates and instructors, students also have an option to communicate through Canvas. Canvas messaging is NOT the same as Lion Pride e-mail. Failure to read and/or receive NCTC e-mails (either in Lion Pride or in Canvas) is no excuse for not complying with any school policy. Be sure to regularly check BOTH the Lion Pride email as well as the Canvas inbox for important messages and information.
At North Central Texas College, students who test but do not meet the passing scores in ALL sections of the TSI Assessment or any other THECB approved testing measurements are required by state law to obtain TSI advising and continuously enroll in a formal college preparatory studies (developmental) program every semester until all TSI requirements are satisfied. TSI program attendance is MANDATORY. Non-compliance with the rules of attendance can result in a student being WITHDRAWN from the college preparatory and college-level math courses. Withdrawals are subject to college policies as set forth in the college catalog.
Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered. All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies. It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member. Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences. The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence. Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for completing assignments and exams. Plan ahead -- Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless the absence is documented and excused by the instructor in advance. Student may be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. From Board Policy FC (LOCAL)
Attendance Assignments (5% of course grade): Credit will be earned by completing each ‘attendance’ assignment. No partial credit can be earned in this assignment group. You will be considered ‘absent’ if you do not complete the required assignment each week to the required level. Generally, expect these assignments to open on Sunday and close on Saturday each week (there are a few exceptions so watch due dates).
Testing may be administered in a variety of ways and the mode of testing may change during the semester as deemed appropriate by the instructor. When possible, in-person proctored testing is preferred. For in-person classes, testing will occur during the designated class times. For online classes, in-person proctored testing may be required. On-site testing may be done in an NCTC testing center, at test locations provided by the math division, or at another authorized testing site. If online testing is used students may be required to use a webcam while testing. If online testing is used, students will be required to scan and upload supporting documents. Students may be asked to demonstrate knowledge/skills in a one-on-one conference if deemed necessary by the instructor.
This schedule is tentative and will most likely change as the semester progresses. It is provided so that you have a general idea of the order and speed with which we will be covering the material.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
MYMATHLAB (MML Access Code): purchase required – register access code inside the Canvas course when it opens. Used to deliver homework, quizzes and exams.
MyMathLab (MML) will provide you access to the E-textbook, multimedia resources, homework help resources, needed for this course. All graded content assignments will be completed online through Canvas in MyMathLab (MML). You will need an access code that can be purchased in the bookstore or online after you click the Canvas link for MyLab & Mastering. Read the module posted in Canvas named: ‘Pearson Resources: Register & Setup Pearson’s MyLab & Mastering’.
Learning New Content:
You are expected to watch all section video presentations in the MyMathLab (MML) multimedia library. These videos can be accessed from the Chapter Contents menu or in the assignments list in MML. This provides additional support in a traditional course. If you do not have a high-speed Internet connection, it may be difficult to view the videos. The videos contain instruction on each objective that is to be covered in the course. If you don’t watch the videos it will make the HW difficult to complete. There is also a power point presentation for each section. In addition to the videos provided by MyMathLab (MML), your instructor may post videos to give an overview of more difficult material you will be learning.
Homework in MyMathLab (MML):
Homework is 15% of your grade. Homework is divided into sections based on the textbook. All due dates are listed in MML and are intended to keep you in pace with the course and the testing schedule. You can complete the assignments until 11:59 pm of the due date listed. The homework may be attempted unlimited times in order to increase your homework grade. You may return to improve homework grades after the listed due date, but any changes made to homework after the listed due date may receive a penalty. Missing or un-attempted homework units will receive a zero.
Need homework help? You have several options:
A) MyMathLab (MML) offers guided question help resources such as View an Example, Watch a video, View the Textbook,
B) Visit the Student Success Center for FREE TUTORING options,
C) schedule private WebEx Office Hours with your instructor,
D) send your instructor the homework question using ‘ASK My Instructor’ feature in MyMathLab (MML) Homework Help. Any of these options will get you a starting place for assistance. The important part is ASKING and NOT WAITING!
Quiz Policies in MyMathLab (MML):
Quizzes are 40% of your grade. You cannot check each problem separately in the quiz function as you can in the homework. You must complete the entire quiz and submit it before having access to your score and review options. Six quizzes are scheduled during the semester: Quiz 1 (Ch 1), Quiz 2 (Ch 2), Quiz 3 (Ch 3), Quiz 4 (Ch 8), Quiz 5 (Ch 11), and Quiz 6 (Ch 12). Each Quiz includes 3 attempts (no time restriction); your best score will be recorded. You may return to improve quiz grades after the listed due date if attempts still exist, but any changes made after the listed due date may receive a penalty. Missing or un-attempted quiz units will receive a zero.
Exam (Test) Policies (MyMathLab & Canvas):
Midterm Exam is 20% of your grade. The Final Exam is 20% of your grade. All test/exams will be administered on MML. Test/Exams are not group activities but a measurement of an individual student’s mastery of the course concepts. Academic honesty is implied and expected! (Refer to definition of Academic Dishonesty according to the Student Handbook below)
The test/exams will be given online with restricted dates, single attempts, and timed-forced completion. Extensive handwritten work submissions, convert to PDF format, will be required to be uploaded immediately (within 20 minutes) in a Canvas assignment location following each test/exam and weigh heavily on the grading of the overall exam. Failure to correctly upload your neatly numbered handwritten work will lead to a grade of zero on the test/exam. Students will be allowed to prepare a one-page handwritten memory enhancer for each test/exam as well as use of a battery-operated, course approved calculator.
No make-up exams will be given after the exam availability closes. Students can test early (prior to our scheduled exam date block) if you know in advance of an absence and can provide proof for reasoning of absence. If you need to take the exam early, please get the instructor’s permission FIRST, so as to set a date/time prior to the scheduled exam date.
Feedback will be provided either directly in the comments of the Canvas gradebook or through a feedback document that is posted in the Canvas gradebook. Scores and feedback will not be published until all students have taken the exam. Students have 48 hours, after the return of each exam/feedback/comments, to contact the instructor by email with questions on grading. After that point, the student forfeits the opportunity to contest an exam grade.
Gradebook in Canvas (official course grade):
The gradebook in Canvas and Pearson's MyMathLab are sync’d and refreshed approximately every 12 hours to give you the most current end of course grade standing possible for completed assignments. Keep in mind that any assignment that has not been attempted will receive a zero.
Canvas has a "what-if" function in the student grade book that will allow a student to temporarily plan future max/min scores on published assignments to see the impact on the end of course grade. (this function is not available in the Canvas app)
The grading policy laid out in this document may be amended during the semester at the instructor’s discretion. Students will be notified in advance of any amendments to grading policy through an Announcement or Canvas message.
Last day to withdraw from a Summer III course with a “W” is Saturday, July 17, 2021.
