GRADING CRITERIA

Grade Scale:   90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

Your participation grade is a measure of your active participation in class.  Participation in assigned class discussions, viewing assigned videos, and posting notes are considered components of this category.  Participation in optional discussion groups, such as Question and Answer boards, the Coffee Shop, or participating in study groups are also considered as participation.

Homework:

Learning math is like learning any other skill, you must PRACTICE!  ML homework is available to provide that practice.  You have at most 5 exercise attempts per homework exercise and 3 tries on each of the 5 attempts.  Basically, you get 15 tries to work exercise #1. if you don’t get it in two or three exercise attempts on the same problem number, seek help.  The dates for homework are suggested dates to help you pace your work, you may practice with the homework until the end of the semester. 

I could go on about the importance of doing the homework. Suffice it to say - if you do not practice adequately, your understanding of the material (and your grade) will reflect it.  Get it done and work to understand the concepts well. Once you get a problem correct, in the homework you will receive the point, even if you try again and get it wrong…so feel free to use up all your attempts to get some good practice. You do not need to finish any one homework assignment in one sitting, and you are free exit and re-enter as you please.  Homework can also be printed, if you want or need to do work offline. You can enter the answers when you are back online to check your answers.  

Quizzes

After reviewing the resources materials (lecture slides, e-textbook, videos, or other material listed in the weekly module) and completing homework assignments students will take a quiz to assess their understanding.  The first attempt at the quiz will be used to personalize the student’s homework.   Each week an online quiz will be due Sunday by 11:00 pm. You may make 3 attempts for each quiz. The highest score out of all attempts will be counted.  A 10% penalty will apply to any quizzes submitted late.  The weekly quiz (usually 12-15 questions) will cover the section(s) of the text that were assigned that week.

Tests (In-person on campus)

There will be 4 unit tests. All tests are weighted equally and must be taken in person.  An in-class test will be given at 6 pm on either a Tuesday or Thursday of the testing week.  If a student is unable to attend the in-class test, he or she may, take it any NCTC campus testing center or in a preapproved off-campus proctored environment during the alternate testing window, usually Wednesday – Thursday of that same week. Students taking the test during the alternate testing dates must make the appropriate arrangements in advance.  See the Testing Document in the Course Orientation Module in Canvas.

There are no make-up exams.

The instructor reserves the right to amend or update the syllabus, as needed.  Any amendments made by your instructor will be announced in Canvas and will supersede this document.

COURSE SUBJECT OUTLINE (Major Assignments and Due Dates)

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized, unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies.  It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member.  Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences.  The instructor will judge the validity of any reason given for an absence.  Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for required work.  Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless the absence is appropriately documented as well as excused by the instructor.  Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. A student that fails to complete orientation tasks during the first week, fails to take the first exams, or fails to complete more than one week of assignments may be  considered excessively absent from the course.  Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. Last day to withdraw from a Summer III course with a “W” is Thursday, July 12, 2018.
