Course Description (NCTC Catalog): Intended for Non STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors. Topics include introductory treatments of sets and logic, financial mathematics, probability and statistics with appropriate applications. Number sense, proportional reasoning, estimation, technology, and communication should be embedded throughout the course. Additional topics may be covered. 

Course Prerequisite(s): Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Contemporary Mathematics; or equivalent.

MyMathLab access for Mathematical Ideas, Miller, Heeren, Hornsby, & Heeren, 13th edition, Pearson, 2016

Scientific calculator, TI-30X IIS is recommended

Phone calculators will not be allowed on exams.

Grade Scale:   90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

 

Your participation grade is a measure of your active participation in class.  Participation in assigned class discussions, viewing assigned videos and completion of study plan are considered components of this category.  At the end of the semester, participation in optional discussion groups, such as Question and Answer boards, conferences, chat session and the Coffee Shop will also be considered for borderline students.

MyMathLab Assignments (due by 11:59pm on Mondays).

Personalized Homework:

In the personalized homework, students automatically receive credit for the questions from objectives that were mastered on their first attempt at the weekly quiz and they can practice the objectives they didn’t master. Students can use the “Show what I need to do” button to see which objectives and questions they need to practice.

When the student opens the Homework Overview, the questions from the objectives he or she mastered on the test or quiz are shown as already done and the homework has an initial score. The student can then work on the questions that cover any objectives that the student did not master on the test or quiz.

Personalized homework assignments are not updated when a student makes additional attempts at the prerequisite quiz.  

Quizzes

After reviewing the resources materials (lecture slides, e-textbook, videos, or other material listed in the weekly module, students will take a quiz to assess their understanding.  The first attempt at the quiz will be used to personalize the student’s homework.   Each week an online quiz will be due by. You may make 3 attempts for each quiz. The highest score out of all attempts will be counted.  A 15% penalty will apply to any quizzes submitted late.  The weekly quiz (usually 8 – 12 questions) will cover the section(s) of the text that were assigned that week.

Tests (In-person)

There will be 4 exams. All exams are weighted equally and must be taken in person.  An in-class exam will be given on Saturday 10 am – 12 pm of the testing week.  If a student is unable to attend the Saturday test, he or she may, take it any NCTC campus testing center or in a preapproved off-campus proctored environment during the alternate testing window, Wednesday – Friday immediately prior to the Saturday in-class test. Students taking the test during the alternate testing window must make the appropriate arrangements in advance.  See Proctors and Testing Document.

There are no make-up exams.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered, including online courses.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies.  It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member.  Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences.  The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence.  Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work.  Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been unjustifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives.    Persistent, unjustified absence will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College.
