Catalog Description

Prerequisite:  Meet TSI college-readiness standard for College Mathematics; or equivalent  48 lecture hours ………………………………. 3 credit hours

Topics may include introductory treatments of sets, logic, number systems, number theory, relations, functions, probability and statistics. Appropriate applications are included.

 

Textbook & Materials Required/ Recommended

Mathematical Ideas, Miller, Heeren, Hornsby, 13th edition, Pearson, 2014

MyMathLab is required.

TI-30X IIS calculator or any Scientific Calculator.

 

Learning Outcomes

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

·         Analyze information using symbolic logic and truth tables;

·         Describe, use and convert between various numeration systems;

·         Solve consumer and financial math problems;

·         Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of probabilities and combinatorics

·         Calculate descriptive statistics;

·          Apply algebraic, geometric and higher-order thinking to model and solve real-world problems;

Attendance Policy

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  Students are responsible for keeping up with what occurs in class when they are absent.  Dropping a course is the student's responsibility, but you MAY be dropped for excessive absence.  See Attendance Regulations in the North Central Texas College Catalog.

 

 

Grading Policy & Procedures

Unit Tests:  50%    Final Exam: (Comprehensive and required) 20%

MyMathLab Homework:  20%     Off-line Assignments (OA’s) 10%

 

OA’s may be turned in one class day late, with a 10 point penalty.

MML deadlines will not be extended.

You will be permitted to correct one test (using guidelines posted under announcements)   IF AND ONLY IF your MML Homework average is 85% or better AND you have no more than 3 absences. For each question corrected you will earn half the points that were deducted.

I will assume that if you are absent, it is for an unavoidable circumstance, so all absences are excused.

If you miss a unit test, you may make it up if  you contact me immediately and make an appointment to take the test (in the testing center) within one week.  Only one test can be made up.

Final Exam:  Wednesday Dec. 13  :  12:00 pm – 1:50 pm

Please do not disturb classmates by talking during lectures.

Ask questions!  If you do not ask, I will assume that you understand perfectly. 

Don’t hesitate to ask.  There are probably others who also do not understand.

Do not bring food to class.  Drinks—OK if you clean up after yourself.

Friday:  9am-noon        Saturday:  10am-1pm
