Grade Scale:   90 – 100% = A;  80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C; 60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

Your participation grade is a measure of your active participation in class.  Participation in assigned class discussions, viewing assigned videos and completion of study plan are considered components of this category.  At the end of the semester, participation in optional discussion groups, such as the Unit Question and Answer boards and the Coffee Shop will also be considered for borderline students.

Instead of a general homework set for each section covered, each student will have a study plan.  Progress through the study plan is mastery based.  After mastery is proven students will have access to the quiz. To confirm mastery, students will use the Quiz me feature in their study plan.  For each objective a student must answer 2 out of the 3 questions posed when using Quiz Me to earn mastery.   Students may also use the Practice feature within the study plan for additional practice. The number of mastery  points needed students do not have to earn all Mastery points prior to taking the quiz will be counted as a portion of course participation.

Quizzes

After sufficient mastery is shown, the weekly quiz in MyMathLab  will become available.  Note: Students need to show mastery in approximately 70% of the concepts before the Weekly Quiz opens.

Each week an online quiz will be due by 11:59 p.m. on Monday. You may make 3 attempts for each quiz. The highest score out of all attempts will be counted.  The weekly quiz (usually 8 – 12 questions) will cover the section(s) of the text that were assigned that week. The two lowest quiz grades will be dropped. It is recommended that you attempt quizzes without notes to practice test conditions.

Tests

There will be 4 exams. All exams are weighted equally.  The last exam is required though it is not comprehensive.  The instructor will give the test on Saturday 10 am – 12 pm of the testing week.  A test may, instead, be taken at any NCTC campus testing center or in a preapproved off-campus proctored environment during the alternate testing window, Wednesday – Friday immediately prior to the Saturday in-class test. Students taking the test during the alternate testing window must make the appropriate arrangements in advance.  See Proctors and Testing Document.

There are no make-up exams.

The instructor reserves the right to amend or update the syllabus at any time.  Any amendments announced by the instructor in Canvas will supersede this document.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered, including online courses.  Attendance in online courses includes participating in discussion boards, reviewing communication from the instructor, viewing videos and completing assignments.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies.  It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency and the faculty member reserves the right to approve the documentation.  Approved college-sponsored activities are excused absences.

Valid reasons for absence do not relieve the student of the responsibility for completing required work.  If an online student is absent and/or misses a due date, the instructor will determine the amount of MyLab work that may be made up.  Students will not be allowed to make up a missed examination.  Students missing an examination will earn a zero for that exam.

Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives or has failed to complete orientation.    Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. From Board Policy FC (LOCAL)
