Catalog Description

Prerequisite:  Meet TSI college-readiness standard for College Mathematics; or equivalent  48 lecture hours ………………………………. 3 credit hours

Topics may include introductory treatments of sets, logic, number systems, number theory, relations, functions, probability and statistics. Appropriate applications are included.

 

Textbook & Materials Required/ Recommended

Mathematical Ideas, Miller, Heeren, Hornsby, 13th edition, Pearson, 2014

(Textbook is not required. A copy of the text may be accessed through MyMathLab.)

 

 MyMathLab Access (Note:  MyMathLab is accessed through Canvas by clicking on the “MyLab and Mastering” tab on the left.  Access to MyMathLab may be purchased online when signing into MyMathLab for the first time, or an access code may be purchased at the NCTC bookstore.  If purchasing a code from the bookstore, be sure that you buy a the code for “MyMathLab”  (not “MyStatLab”). If you are unable to pay for the MyMathLab access in the first week you may access the course materials and homework with “Temporary Access.”) 

 

TI-30X IIS; TI-84 calculator or equivalent

 

Access to computer with Microsoft Excel.  (You may use the computers in the NCTC computer labs to complete Excel assignments).

 

Learning Outcomes

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

·         Analyze information using symbolic logic and truth tables;

·         Describe, use and convert between various numeration systems;

·         Solve consumer and financial math problems;

·         Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of probabilities and combinatorics

·         Calculate descriptive statistics;

·          Apply algebraic, geometric and higher-order thinking to model and solve real-world problems;

Attendance Policy

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  Students are responsible for keeping up with what occurs in class when they are absent.  Dropping a course is the student's responsibility, but you MAY be dropped for excessive absence.  See Attendance Regulations in the North Central Texas College Catalog.

Chapter Quizzes (MyMathLab) – 10%

Excel Assignments – 20%

Tests – 60% (15% per test)

No Test Grades will be dropped.
