Course description: MATH 0305 – Beginning Algebra (3 credit hours)
A study of relations and functions, inequalities, algebraic expressions and equations (absolute value, polynomial, radical, rational), with a special emphasis on linear and quadratic expressions and equations. This course does not count toward graduation at NCTC.
NCBM 0205 – BASE NON-COURSED BASED OPTION FOR MATH (2 credit hours)
This course is designed for those students with little algebra background, and must be taken concurrently with MATH 0305. Course may include basic study skills, note-taking, time management, learning styles, math anxiety, and test-taking strategies. This course does not count toward graduation at NCTC.
Course prerequisites: Appropriate placement score on TSI or other approved assessment test.

Registration in the course gives you the access code to the online learning platform and e-book needed for MATH 0305 (MyLab Math for Developmental Math: Basic, Intro & Interm Algebra Access Code – 18- week access). You do not need to purchase a separate access code. The cost of this access code is included in your tuition and fees. Instructions can be found in a separate Module within our Canvas Course. Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

Attendance Policy:
Regular attendance is expected and necessary for student success in this course. If you miss in excess of two weeks of class, you will be withdrawn from this course by your instructor. Student Learning Outcomes: At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
MATH 0305:
- Define, represent, and perform operations on real and complex numbers.
- Recognize, understand, and analyze features of a function.
- Recognize and use algebraic (field) properties, concepts, procedures (including factoring), and algorithms to combine, transform, and evaluate absolute value, polynomial, radical, and rational expressions.
- Identify and solve absolute value, polynomial, radical, and rational equations.
- Identify and solve absolute value and linear inequalities.
- Model, interpret and justify mathematical ideas and concepts using multiple representations.
- Connect and use multiple strands of mathematics in situations and problems, as well as in the study of other disciplines.
NCBM 0205:
- Use appropriate symbolic notation and vocabulary to communicate, interpret, and explain mathematical concepts.
- Define, represent, and perform operations on real numbers, applying numeric reasoning to investigate and describe quantitative relationships and solve real world problems in a variety of contexts.
- Use algebraic reasoning to solve problems that require ratios, rates, percentages, and proportions in a variety of contexts using multiple representations.
- Apply algebraic reasoning to manipulate expressions and equations to solve real world problems.
- Use graphs, tables, and technology to analyze, interpret, and compare data sets.
- Construct and use mathematical models in verbal, algebraic, graphical, and tabular form to solve problems from a variety of contexts and to make predictions and decisions.
