This stand-alone course is an interdisciplinary survey of cultures focusing on the philosophical and aesthetic factors in human values with an emphasis on the historical development of the individual and society and the need to recreate.

ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

 Reading Assignments: Students will complete one reading assignment for each unit. These are due on the first day of lecture for that unit.

 

Paper and Application Assignments: These assignments reflect the seven different means of cultural expression covered in this course. See Canvas for assignment summaries.

 

Note Checks: Taking notes is a vital part of this course, and they are necessary to complete the application assignments. We will conduct at least two random note checks during the semester to evaluate the quality of the notes you take.

 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

 

Demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of works in the arts and humanities.

 

Articulate how these works express the values of the individual and society within a historical and social context.

 

Articulate an informed personal response and critically analyze works in the arts and humanities.

 

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the influence of literature, philosophy, and the arts on cultural experiences.

 

Demonstrate an awareness of the creative process and why humans create.

  ATTENDANCE POLICY

 

Students are required to attend all sessions. Any student who misses a class will be assessed a five point penalty, per absence, on the reading assignment for that week.

 

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

 

Unit 1: Game Theory

Unit 2: Comic Books

Unit 3: Propaganda

Unit 4: Narrative

Unit 5: Music

Unit 6: Film

Unit 7: Oral Histories

 

Each unit will take approximately two weeks to complete.

 

We will meet during the week of finals, even though there is not a traditional exam. You will present your last projects on December 14th at 9:30 AM.
