LECTURE EXAMS

The lecture tests will include all notes, discussions from lecture, and reading assignments. Lecture tests are NOT cumulative. Exam questions will be multiple choice, true/false, fill – in – the blank, short answer, and/or essay.

LABORATORY PROJECTS

LAB QUIZZES:

There will be 10, 10-point quizzes throughout the semester, totaling 100 points. Quizzes will cover flowers, foliages, equipment, techniques, and concepts covered during lab. The information covered in these quizzes is CUMULATIVE. Please note that floral materials will be available to you to review in the floral cooler. These will NOT be able to be made up if you miss.

FLORAL DESIGN PORTFOLIO:

Worth 200 points. Must include a page for each design constructed in lab. Each page must have name of design style, picture of design, description of design style and list of flowers used in design. Notebook must also include flowers we have covered in class and foliage. Each flower and foliage should have its own page with a picture and a detailed description of the flower and how it would be used in an arrangement. (Will receive handout with specific details). Notebook will be submitted in Canvas.

CLASS AND LAB PARTICIPATION:

Participation is a very important component of your learning experience. This class is designed to be a class in which students learn from each other as well as by participating in hands-on projects. Students are expected to take an active part in all discussions and come prepared for these discussions. After each lab, students are expected to clean up their work area, which includes sweeping, cleaning countertops, and putting tools away, etc. If a student misses a lab, REGARDLESS OF THE EXCUSE, the participation points for the day will not be earned, and a zero will be recorded in the gradebook for that lab. There are NO make-up labs.

To help stay within budget, I am asking that students supply their own containers. These containers are easily found and can be purchased in thrift stores, local florists, Wal-mart and some can be found in your own home. I will let you know in advance what style arrangement we will be learning and type of container you will need to bring. Also by doing this you can keep the arrangement or give it away as a gift!!!!

Students are not allowed to talk on cell phones, text, or smoke during lab.

 FIELDTRIPS & REPORTS:

We will be taking several field trips or having guest speakers throughout the semester. Students are expected to attend these fieldtrips and show up on time to the destination of the field trip. If a student misses a field trip, regardless of the excuse, the points assigned for that field trip will not be earned, and a zero will be recorded in the grade book for that field trip. There are NO makeup field trips. After each field trip, students will submit field trip reports covering the questionnaire that is taken to the field trip as well as any other information discussed while on the field trip. These reports must be in paragraph form and be well written. They will also be submitted via Canvas, due on Friday before 11:59 pm. Late work will be counted as a zero.

ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR MY CLASS

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of each student, and all absences are to be considered unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergency.

I will keep written records of absences and late arrivals; without a valid excuse, your class participation grade will be affected. FOR EVERY 3 ABSENCES, REGARDLESS OF THE EXCUSE, THE STUDENT’S FINAL GRADE WILL DROP BY ONE LETTER. In addition, note the “tardiness” policy below.

Students who come to class late need to make sure that they are counted as present on the roster; see instructor after class to have the roster updated. If the student fails to have the roster updated, and there is no record of attendance, the student will be counted as absent.

If a student has been unjustifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives, he/she may be dropped from this class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor.

The instructor will not provide class notes to those who are absent.  As a student, it is your responsibility to obtain the missed materials and notes from a classmate.

TARDINESS AND ATTENDANCE:

Three instances of tardiness (entering class late) will constitute one absence.  Three absences will drop your final grade by one letter.

EMAIL ADDRESS:

Having an email address is mandatory for this class. The college provides one free of charge and provides students with computer labs. I will periodically email you important notices, so be sure to check your email before coming to class.

HANDOUTS:

There will be handouts provided for you on CANVAS and can be printed to supplement your learning experience.

COMPUTER PROBLEMS:

If you are having computer or CANVAS trouble, call the NCTC Computer Help Desk at 940-668-3335. Please do not call the instructor.

CELL PHONES:

Please silence all cell phones before class. In cases of EMERGENCIES, you may answer your phone, but please leave the classroom to do so.

TEXTING AND OUTSIDE COMMUNICATION:

Texting and outside communication during class is prohibited.

LATE WORK:

Late work will not be accepted for any reason. All assignments not turned in by the due date will be given a zero in the gradebook.

MISSING EXAMS:

If you are going to miss a lecture test, I must be notified prior to the exam. If a lecture test is missed with a valid excuse, a point penalty may still be assessed depending on the individual situation. A make-up test should be scheduled within 24 hours. If a lecture test is missed without prior notification or a valid excuse, an automatic ZERO will be assigned.

TOBACCO PRODUCTS:

Please do not bring tobacco products into the classroom and greenhouse or any containers that might have tobacco byproducts in them. If you do use tobacco products, always wash your hands with soap and water before touching any plants.

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR:

A student who engages in any behavior or language in the classroom that intentionally or unintentionally disrupts the learning process will be asked to leave the class and may be reported to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.

DRESS:

We will be working in the lab room. Please dress appropriately for lab activities.

I am open to receiving your comments, either positive or negative. These help me to enrich this course and improve as a teacher. Please feel free to see me, or e-mail me at mdkaden@nctc.edu
