Welcome to Composition I

Hello Students,

I think you'll find this class different from other English classes you've taken before. Of course, we'll work on writing texts, but composition is so much more than that! It includes visuals, audio, and other forms of communication. Additionally, I’m a firm believer in holistic education, so we'll also include exercises that connect our minds and bodies to create meaningful and personalized written works.

You will also learn and use new tools like ChatGPT, Grammarly.com, Scribbr.com, and Canva.com to improve your writing, create impressive projects, and stay organized. Don’t fear AI—learn to make it work for you ethically, just like any powerful tool. I’ll be learning right alongside you all semester. There are always new skills we can teach each other. My class is about continuously helping each other succeed. There’s no competition; I believe everyone can succeed, and together, we make it easier.

Here are links to all the materials, apps, and extensions we'll be using throughout the semester.

If you want to get ahead, subscribe to the free versions (if you don’t already) of Scribbr.com, Canva.com, ChatGPT, and Grammarly.com. We will save a lot of class time, and you will be able to assist other students.

The two books are essays available for free online, but students tend to find it easier to read and write from a hard copy. You’ll see they are very inexpensive, and the Amazon link is in the “Text and Resources” section above. I might ask you to add the digital books for both Comp I and Comp II, but I’m waiting for further instructions. We can begin without them.

On the first day of class, please make sure you have your school password and email, as this will let you access OneLogin and our Canvas Course. You should have received an email from the school with this information. Doing so will save you a lot of confusion and a trip to the IT office.

You should also bring notepaper, pens, and highlighters to each class. We complete many assignments during class, and these supplies will be very useful.

I can’t wait to meet all of you in person. See you soon!
