Course Description (NCTC Catalog): A study of: research and theory in the psychology of learning, cognition, and motivation; factors that impact learning, and application of learning strategies. Theoretical models of strategic learning, cognition, and motivation serve as the conceptual basis for the introduction of the college-level student academic strategies. Students use assessment instruments (e.g. learning inventories) to help them identify their own strengths and weaknesses as strategic learners. Students are ultimately expected to integrate and apply the learning skills discussed across their own academic programs and become effective and efficient learners. Students developing these skills should be able to continually draw from the theoretical models they have learned.

Strongly Recommended Course Materials: Sherfield, R. M., Moody, P. G. (2014). Cornerstones for College Success. Pearson, 7th edition.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

	At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
1.	Describe the research and theory in the psychology of learning, cognition, and motivation.
2.	Strengthen academic performance by identifying key components of the successful student.
3	Analyze and gain an understanding of historical, biological, psychological, and socio-cultural dimensions of learning and developmental psychology, dimensions that can simultaneously influence human thought, emotion and behavior.
4.	Compose writing assignment(s) using Standard American English and basic computer skills.
5.	Develop self-awareness and career goals within an academic atmosphere.
6.	Evaluate the quality and conclusions of the research to which they are exposed, which can simultaneously influence human thought, emotion and behavior.

IMPORTANT POLICIES____________________________________________________________

• Late work is not accepted.
• Make-up exams are only allowed in extreme cases (i.e., sick with doctor’s note, funeral w/ proof, etc.).
• Cell Phones are to remain silenced and put away during class hours (in pocket, purse, or backpack).
• Disruptive behavior which detracts from the class in any way may result in your dismissal from the class for that day or other appropriate consequence (See Student Handbook referenced below).

An attendance sheet will be passed around at the beginning of each class period and it is your responsibility to initial this sheet. 

 

• Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is ___April 6, 2017 If you wish to withdraw from this or any course, you must see the Admissions Office at any campus.
