Course Description (NCTC Catalog): A work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. A learning plan is developed by the college and the employer.     

Course Prerequisite(s):

  • Be in the last semester of the Criminal Justice AAS degree.
  • Departmental consent to participate in the internship course.
  • Secure an internship placement one week prior to the semester beginning.
  • Completion of enrollment form and liability release (prior to beginning internship or no later than the first-class day, whichever comes first).

Required: No textbook is required but you are required to do a book report.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

 

Apply the theory concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

 

You must complete 144 hours.  It is vital that you keep a timesheet.  Your supervisor must sign your timesheet.  Students are encouraged to follow their plan of completion.  If you cannot follow your schedule; you must notify your supervisor.

Important Information

 

Important Information Weekly Journals-10% of grade

You should keep notes of your activities each day of your internship. At the end of each week, you will then compile your notes into a summary of your weekly activities. The summary should include a description of the duties, activities, and events of the week, as well as a summary of what you have learned over the course of the month. Once you begin your internship contact hours, weekly journals must be submitted no later than 11:00 p.m. the last day of the week by uploading them in a drop box in CANVAS. Some weeks will be shorter than others. The weekly journal should describe your internship experience for the weeks and the number of hours you worked. If you did not have internship hours for a week, you should still note that in the journal and explain why you did not report to your assignment. Late journals will be penalized.

 

 

Meeting with the Completion Center-10% of grade

You must visit the completion center twice before completing the internship. The purpose of visiting the Completion Center is to discuss the following: 1. Resume, 2. Personal Statement, 3. Interview techniques, 4. Career Opportunities/Choices. When you submit your final paper, you must also submit a signed document from the Completion Center to verify your visits. You must submit an updated resume and an updated personal statement at the end of your internship.

 

Book Report-20% of grade

You will write an 8 page book report from the book "Blink". The book report should be written in MLA format and should tie in content from your virtual or placement internship experience. Also, you will complete a term paper about your experiences in the internship program. The text of the term paper (excluding title page or references) should be 8-10 typed, double-spaced pages, in a 12-pt. font. (MLA format) In the first section of the paper, you should summarize the activities and major events that you experienced while performing your internship. The second section should be a critique of the internship itself. Was it a good, marginal, or poor experience? How well did the agency where you interned meet your expectations? In this section, you should assess both your internship experience and the agency where you interned. In the final section, you should compare/contrast your educational knowledge with your field experience. How did the internship match what you learned in school and how did it vary from your academic understanding of the work and field? How well did your educational experience prepare you for field work? What was the most surprising about your field work experience? Did the internship experience confirm your career plans or change them and why? Your paper should include a cover/title page. You only need to include a reference page if you cite/refer to outside material in the text of your paper. The term paper should be submitted the Sunday before the day of finals in CANVAS.

 

Formal Evaluation-20% of grade

Your supervisor or the agency’s internship coordinator will evaluate you at the end of your internship. We will provide a formal evaluation form to your supervisor for this purpose. The evaluation form will be emailed to the internship supervisor using the contact information you provided on your enrollment form. Your supervisor will fax or email a copy of the completed evaluation to the instructor. You should not handle this evaluation form at any time. It must be emailed directly to the instructor from the internship supervisor. Once the evaluation has been received by the instructor, you will be notified so the exit interview can be scheduled. Once the exit interview is completed, your final grade will be posted.
