2.      compare and contrast theories of ethics with personal and professional practices;

3.       interpret and apply ethical considerations in policing, the courts, and corrections.

Syllabus Review

Syllabus Quiz – Must score a 100 (Student may take the quiz as many times as necessary to obtain a score of 100).

Ch. 1 –Morality, ethics and human behavior

Week 3

Ch. 2 – Systems used to determine what is ethical and what is unethical.

Week 4

Ch. 3 – , Justice and Law, Origins of the concept of justice, corrective justice and restorative justice, immoral laws

Weeks 5 & 6

Ch. 4 – Theories of moral development, beliefs and behaviors

Exam 1, Chapters 1 -  4

Week 7

Ch. 5 – The Police role in society, crime fighter or public servant

Week 8

Ch. 6 – Police discretion, discrimination, use of force issues.

Week 9

Chapter 7 – Police corruption and society’s response

Weeks 10 & 11

Exam 2, Chapters 5,6 & 7

Ch. 9 – Discretion and dilemmas in the legal profession

Week 12

Ch. 10 – Ethical misconduct in the courts and responses, ethical misconduct, explanations for misconduct

Week 13

Ch. 11 -  The ethics of punishment and corrections

Ch. 12 – Discretion and dilemmas in corrections
