At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

 

Explain the roles of police and correctional agencies concerning delinquency.

 

Compare and contrast the theories of delinquent conduct

 

Describe the juvenile law and the role of juvenile courts.

General Description of Subject Matter

 

Ch. 1 - Childhood & Delinquency

Legal concept of delinquency, status offending, the evolution of the concept of adolescence and the juvenile court.

 

Ch. 2 - The Nature and Extent of Delinquency

Measurement of delinquent behaviors, trends, patterns, etc. Impact of race, gender, class, etc. on offenders.   

 

Ch. 3 - Individual Views of Delinquency

Theories that explain delinquency as a product of choice, biological, and psychological factors.

 

Ch. 4 – Structure, Process, Culture, and Delinquency

Theories that explain delinquency as a product of culture and socialization.

 

Ch. 5 – Social Reaction, Social Conflict, and Delinquency

Theories that explain delinquency as a product of human interaction, and economic and political forces.

 

Ch. 6 – Developmental Theories

Explains delinquency as a product of development. Covers issues such as onset of delinquency, continuity, paths, and termination of delinquent career.

 

Ch. 7 – Gender and Delinquency

Sex-based differences in offending

 

Ch. 8 – The Family and Delinquency

Influence of families on children and delinquency

 

Ch. 9 – Peers and Delinquency

Teen gangs and the effect peers have on delinquency

 

Ch. 10 – Schools and Delinquency

Influence of schools on delinquency

 

Ch. 11 – Drug Use and Delinquency

Influence of drugs and substance abuse on delinquency

 

Ch. 12 – Delinquency Prevention

Efforts at delinquency prevention

 

Ch. 13 – Juvenile Justice: Then and Now

We will look primarily at the contemporary juvenile justice system.

The role of police in delinquency prevention.

Ch. 15 – Juvenile Court Process

Pretrial, trial, and sentencing

Ch. 16 – Juvenile Corrections

Probation, Community, Treatment, and Institutionalization
