Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered. All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies as determined by the instructor. It is the student responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval and judgement by the faculty member. Approved college sponsored activities are the only absences for which a student should not be held liable and only when provided by a college official ahead of the absence. Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work. Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless they have reasons acceptable to the instructor. A student who is compelled to be absent when a test is given should petition the instructor, in advance if possible, for permission to postpone the exam. Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. From Board Policy FC (LOCAL)
Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is _April 4th, 2019___.

If you need to meet with the instructor at a different time, please schedule an appointment. If you are having issues understanding the reading assignments, please feel free to schedule a time to meet with the instructor. The instructor is not available on Saturdays and Sundays at all. Any questions sent on Friday after 12, Saturday or Sunday will be answered on Monday. It is important that you read your assignments at the beginning of the week so your questions can be answered by Friday at Noon. You do have permission to text the instructor if an exam or quiz is not showing up.
Contacting the Instructor
You may contact the instructor via email or calling the numbers listed in this syllabus. Please use the CANVAS email to ask general questions.
Emails
All emails will be responded to within 24 hours. Again, emails should be used to ask all questions. Make sure to write your class in the subject box and be sure to include your name in the email. Also, if you need to schedule an appointment to meet with the instructor, please do so by sending an email.
Online Office hours
You will be given an opportunity to meet with the instructor in an online office. To use this office you will need to use a device with a video and microphone. The link for the online office will be labeled “conference.”
Make-up work and late assignments
Neither make-up exams nor quizzes will be given nor will late work be accepted. You have a week to complete your assignments and it is important that you do so. All assignments are important so please do not discount them. A ten point quiz could be the difference between an A or B or you passing or failing the class. I cannot stress how important it is for you to complete all assignments.
Lectures and readings
It is your responsibility to read the chapters and take notes. Do not depend solely on the posted notes and the Power Point presentations. Use the Power Points as a guide. YOU WILL NEED YOUR BOOK. The exams and quizzes will not only come from the Power Point presentations but also from the entire chapter.
Grading Scale
The grading scale above gives a grade based on you completing all assignments. Until you have completed every assignment, the scale above can only be used to let you know how many points you need at the end of the class.
Instructions for all assignments
|
Please make sure you print a copy of your syllabus. It is important to have a hard copy to look at just in case there are technical issues with your computer.
Learning Outcomes Pre-Test Assignment
You will be required to complete this assignment before moving into Module 1 Week 1 assignments. You have to answer the questions before you will be able to move on to Module 1. This is NOT for a grade but just a chance for me to access what you already know. All the questions must be answered. If you do not know the answer then just write “I do not know”. Again, this will not count as a grade but is mandatory.
Exams
You have a total of four (4) exams. Each exam is worth 100 points. There will be a total of 50 questions either multiple choice, true/false, essay questions. You will have 75 minutes to complete the exam. When taking the exam, you will see only one question at a time. The chapters each exam will cover are located on your class calendar. Do not depend on the Power Point presentations for the exam. You must read the chapter and take good notes. To protect the integrity of this online class, you will not receive a copy of the exam. Also you will not be able to download or print the exam. It is vital that you take good notes and keep up with your Power Point presentations. This will help you be successful on the final.
You must be logged-in to take the exam in enough time to complete it. Even if you are taking the exam, it will shut off at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday; therefore, make sure you log- in to the exam in enough time to finish. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A STUDY GUIDE!
Final Exam
You will have 50 questions on your Final Exam (otherwise known as Exam #4). You will have 75 minutes to complete your final. The final exam will only be available from May 13th @ 8:00AM until May 15th @ 11:00PM. As stated above, be sure to keep good notes from the readings and keep up with your Power Point presentations. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A STUDY GUIDE!
Quizzes
You will have a total of 10 quizzes. Each quiz is worth 10 points. There will be 10 multiple choice questions on each quiz. You will have 15 minutes to complete each quiz. Similar to the exams, questions on the quiz will come from the entire chapter reading.
There is no study guide for the quizzes, chapter exams or the final exam. Chapter exams, quizzes and the final exam will be graded immediately unless there are essay questions. If there are essay questions on an exam it will be graded within 48 hours.
Discussion Forums
You are required to participate in a total of twelve (12) Discussion Forums worth 10 points each. Discussion forums will be related to readings and must follow the instructions in this section. In order to receive full credit for the discussion forums you must do the following: (1.) Post your response to the initial question(s) with the correct answer with a minimum of 100 words, (2.) Respond to 2 of your classmates with a minimum of 50 words for each response (3.) Make your initial post on time, (4.) Make your response post on time, (5.) Make sure your initial post and response post are written in a scholarly manner. Do not respond by just saying I agree. Be sure to tell why and add supporting facts. Total possible points for each discussion forum 10
- The question for the initial post will be posted in the forum. You must answer the question in its entirety. Post your response to the initial question(s) with the correct answer with a minimum of 100 words Note: If you do not make your initial post, you will not receive credit for the forum. Post reflecting only a response to your classmates will be considered as incomplete and will receive a zero.
- You must respond to two of your classmates with a minimum of 50 words for each response. In your response, you should give feedback on their response, ask probing questions and provide intellectual feedback. A response stating “I agree with you” only is not acceptable and will result in you losing five points. This is a discussion forum. Please create a dialogue between you and your classmates.
- Your answer to the initial question must be posted by day 3 of the week and you must respond to two classmates by day 5. For example: The week starts on a Monday, Wednesday is day 3 and Friday is day 5. It is unacceptable to post all of your responses on Sunday. This does not give your classmates adequate time to read your posts. ANYONE WHO POSTS THEIR INITIAL POST AND RESPONSE POSTS ON A SUNDAY WILL RECEIVE A 0.
- This is a college class. It is important for you to display your intellect. Your initial post and at least two of your responses should be written in a scholarly manner. In the past, students have posted more than 3 times, which is fine. All I ask is that 3 of your post be well written.
- Please make sure you write your post in a scholarly manner. Be sure that all sentences have punctuation marks, start with a capital letter and reflect the usage of spell check. You must also make at least one citation from your textbook in your initial post supporting your response. For example: Mandatory sentencing, truth-in-sentencing and three strikes laws have played a major part in prison incarceration rates increasing between 1970 and 2008 (Alarid, 2018) .
70 points-Video Case Assignments
You will complete 14 video case assignments. Each video case assignment is worth five (5) points. After watching the video, you will answer five (5) questions about the video. You will have two chances to complete the assignment.

100 points:Semester Project Due by April 7th, 2019 by 11:00pm
Topic: Probation/Parole Excessive Caseloads and Prison Re-entry Programs
Introduction: The introduction is where you will introduce your topics and then give the reader insight as to what is about to be discussed in the paper.
Body: First, research the rate of excessive caseloads in probation/parole and their effects on proper supervision. Make sure to provide detailed information about this topic. Provide numbers, charts, graph etc. to further expand on this problem and how it effects supervision. Please make sure to cite your sources here as well.
Second, discuss some of the policy implications that can be used in order to resolve this problem. You will expand on how these solutions can help not only the probation/parole officer but also the client and the community. Explain in great detail and cite your sources.
Third, you will answer the question: What are re-entry programs and do they work? Here you will analyze prison re-entry programs and discuss their pros and cons. What are some of the hardships that those leaving prison face when returning back to their communities? You will also include ways to remedy the issues associated with prison reintegration.
Conclusion
In your conclusion, just summarize your findings and just reaffirm why the remedies for both excessive caseloads and reentry, will be advantageous for both the client and the community.
