At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Lecture Learning Outcomes
1. Distinguish between prokaryotic, eukaryotic, plant and animal cells, and identify major cell structures.
2. Identify stages of the cell cycle, mitosis (plant and animal), and meiosis.
3. Interpret results from cell physiology experiments involving movement across membranes, enzymes, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration.
4. Apply genetic principles to predict the outcome of genetic crosses and statistically analyze results.
5. Describe karyotyping, pedigrees, and biotechnology and provide an example of the uses of each.
6. Identify parts of a DNA molecule, and describe replication, transcription, and translation.
7. Analyze evidence for evolution and natural selection.
Lab Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
- Apply scientific reasoning to investigate questions and utilize scientific tools such as microscopes and laboratory equipment to collect and analyze data.
- Use critical thinking and scientific problem-solving to make informed decisions in the laboratory.
- Communicate effectively the results of scientific investigations.

Grades are determined as follows:
A=720-800 points B=640-719 points C=560-639 points D=420-559 points F= below 559 points
NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN. If you miss an exam for a documented approved medical reason you will be allowed to take an all essay question exam in its place.
There will not be any extra credit points offered. On occasion there may be bonus points offered to everyone on an equal basis. Please do not ask for me to ‘bump’ your grade at the end of the semester. Plan for the grade you want to work toward. Don’t wait until the end of the semester.
Classroom Policies
- Food and drinks are not allowed in the classroom.
- Do not wear radio/recording headsets in class.
- Turn off cell phones.
- Students must get permission from the instructor to record or video tape lectures.
- There will be no extra credit points, do not ask.
- Missing more than 15 minutes of class is considered an absence
- No make ups are allowed in lab or lecture, you are responsible for all missed material and assignments.
- Do not ask for a ‘bump’ in your final grade. It is unprofessional and disrespectful.
- EXAMS begin on-time. You will not be allowed to take an exam if you are more than 15 minutes late.

Grades WILL NOT be given out over the phone or via personal email; nor will be grades be discussed with any individual other than the student. All grades will be recorded in CANVAS, so students can monitor their grades using CANVAS grades.
Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered. All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies as determined by the instructor. It is the student responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval and judgement by the faculty member. Approved college sponsored activities are the only absences for which a student should not be held liable and only when provided by a college official ahead of the absence. Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work. Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless they have reasons acceptable to the instructor. A student who is compelled to be absent when a test is given should petition the instructor, in advance if possible, for permission to postpone the exam. Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. From Board Policy FC (LOCAL)
