Course Description (NCTC Catalog):
A course open to all students directed toward understanding the elements and principles of art as applied to the visual arts: painting, sculpture and architecture as well as printmaking, ceramics, metal work and weaving. Emphasis will also be placed on historically significant artworks to help the students understand artistic influence on other artists that follow chronologically, specific art movements and also society.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance:
Students should plan to attend class as part of their contribution to the course. When a student must miss a class, the responsibility for making up the work lies with the student. When a student has an excessive number of absences, the instructor may choose to drop him/her from the course; however, the student is ultimately responsible for dropping the course through the Registrar’s Office. The students should familiarize themselves with the policies set forth in the catalog. The instructor should inform the student of the final date for dropping the course with a grade of “W.”

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
This course introduces the origins and historical development of art. Emphasis is on the relationship of design principles to various art forms including but not limited to sculpture, painting, and architecture. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and analyze a variety of artistic styles, periods, and media.
The class will meet once a week for two hours and fifty minutes and include the following components: lecture, discussion and demonstration through video or museum field trip.
