Course Description (NCTC Catalog):
Instruction in advanced horsemanship skills including cues, lead changes, head-set, side-passing and pivoting will be presented.
|
|
Other Course Competencies:
Course content will focus on proper riding position, use of cues, and the correct use of equipment.
Further discussion will also include anatomical, physiological and psychological influences on the horse and rider.
Maneuvers and patterns will incorporate collection, lateral movements, changes of lead, turns, and rollbacks.
Proper care of equipment, including leather goods, “Saddle Fit” parameters and basic knowledge of commonly used bits and spurs will also be discussed.

Course Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of AGEQ 1319, Horsemanship 1 or AGEQ 1370, Ranch Horse 1, and/or instructor approval.

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate a balanced seat and posture in all gaits.
(2) Maintain correct leads.
(3) Develop and utilize proper cues.

The following attendance policy will take precedence over NCTC’s General Attendance Policy:
- Student will receive 20 pts./day for Attendance/Participation. You will receive 0 points for each Excused absence and a 50 pt. deduction for an Unexcused absence.
- YOU must EMAIL the instructor before class (or ASAP) for an absence to be excused and will be excused only at the discretion of the instructor.
- Three excused absences will equal an UNEXCUSED absence.
- Two UNEXCUSED absences will result in dropping a letter grade.
- Each subsequent UNEXCUSED absence will result in an additional letter grade drop. (Students’ responsibility to drop course).
- NO make-up work for UNEXCUSED absences. Permission to make-up work for an excused absence will only be granted in advance and/or at the instructor’s discretion. It is the student’s (YOUR) responsibility to notify instructor and arrange for makeup of missed work
COURSE OUTLINE: * Content of class subject to change under instructor’s discretion.
- Basic theory and proper use of bits and spurs
- Basic tack and equipment care, and tack room maintenance
- Proper saddle fit
- Continued emphasis on balanced riding position, and use of cues for maneuver execution
- Continued progression on forehand, hindquarter turns and rollbacks
- Lateral movements and exercises in preparation for gait transitions (upward & downward), collection and bilateral coordination of rider’s cues and aids.
- Changes of leads
- Basics of riding one handed/neck reining
- Ranch Horsemanship – guest Instructor
- Introduction to “Cowboy/Western Dressage” – guest instructor
Classroom/Arena Etiquette:
The NCTC Equine Dept. is committed to promoting a level of classroom etiquette conducive to maximum instruction and learning. It is assumed that adults in a collegiate environment will act accordingly, and inappropriate classroom/arena behavior will not be tolerated. Within this context the following etiquette is expected.
- Be on time for class and remain for the entire period. You are inconsiderate when you arrive late and leave early.
- Refrain from talking while the instructor, speaker, or another student is talking. Idle chattering is disruptive and disrespectful to others. Listen to what is being said to others and try to learn from their instruction as well.
- Do not use cell phones or any other electronic device in this course. However you may record lectures.
- Students MUST wear jeans and a shoe/boot with a heel. NO crop tops or inappropriate clothing (i.e., “see through” or extremely “low rise” jeans)
- Waiver of Liability, Helmet Waiver, Rules of the Barn, and Syllabus contract must be signed and handed back before student can begin the class.
*Failure to follow these guidelines will result in disciplinary action, which will include point reductions and/or removal from the classroom/arena, and/or the course. The instructor retains the right to excuse and/or drop students who consistently disregard these guidelines and display inappropriate behavior.

Thanksgiving Holiday-no classes November 27-30
Final exams-no class-December 9-14 (follow exam schedule)
Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is November 1.
DISABILITY SERVICES (Office for Students with Disabilities)
The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) provides support services for students with disabilities, students enrolled in technical areas of study, and students who are classified as special populations (i.e. single parents).

WECM Course
Students are expected to follow all rules and regulations found in the student handbook and published online.
Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation and collusion. Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty. See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.
Consequences for academic dishonesty will be handled on a case by case basis according to severity of the offense.
- Verbal warning and 0 (no points) credit for the assignment in question for all parties involved.
- Second offense for any of the parties involved in a second offense will be kicked out of the class.
