Course Description (NCTC Catalog):

Instruction in basic horsemanship skills including handling, saddling, bridling, mounting, riding, grooming, safety, and basic health care. Emphasis will be given to proper riding techniques, use of aids and cues, and proper leg, seat, and hand position. NCTC School horse and appropriate tack will be provided for use.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

 

Recognize and employ basic handling and riding safety practices

 

Identify and care for equipment and tack

 

Demonstrate proper leg, seat, and hand positions as they relate to riding techniques

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies as determined by the instructor. It is the student responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval and judgement by the faculty member.  Approved college sponsored activities are the only absences for which a student should not be held liable and only when provided by a college official ahead of the absence. Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work.  Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless they have reasons acceptable to the instructor. A student who is compelled to be absent when a test is given should petition the instructor, in advance if possible, for permission to postpone the exam.  Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College.


YOU must text the instructor within a reasonable time frame before class (or ASAP) for an absence to be excused and will be excused only at the discretion of the instructor. No email notifications.

Three excused absences will equal an UNEXCUSED absence.

Two UNEXCUSED absences will result in dropping a letter grade.

Three  UNEXCUSED absences will result in receiving an F for the course (it is the student’s responsibility to drop the course).

NO make-up work for UNEXCUSED absences. Permission to make-up work for an excused absence will only be granted in advance and/or at the instructor’s discretion. 

It is the student’s (YOUR) responsibility to notify instructor regarding absences and significant tardiness, and to arrange for makeup of missed class work.

-Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is April 3, 2020.

-Spring Break: March 16-21

-Finals Week: May 11-16


Course Outline

  1. Principles of horse safety
  2. Basic principles of horse riding, training and behavior
  3. Proper catching and haltering, grooming, saddling, bridling, mounting, dismounting, and equipment adjustment
  4. Balanced riding position and use of basic training aids and cues
  5. Warm up and cool down; gaits, leads, and diagonals
  6. Stopping and backing
  7. Forehand turns, hindquarter turns, and side passing
  8. Transitions of gaits (upward and downward)
  9. Learning and performing basic patterns
  10. Riding etiquette in both group and individual setting
  11. Critical thinking, respectful and professional communication, teamwork, personal responsibility will also be learning outcomes of this course

CLASSROOM & ARENA ETIQUETTE

The NCTC Equine Dept. is committed to promoting a level of classroom/arena etiquette conducive to maximum instruction and learning. It is assumed that adults in a collegiate environment will act accordingly. Inappropriate classroom/arena behavior will not be tolerated.  Within this context the following etiquette is expected:

Be on time for class and remain for the entire periodYou are inconsiderate if you arrive late and leave early*. Value the short time we have in this course.

Refrain from talking while the instructor, student helper, or another student is talking*. Idle chattering is disruptive and disrespectful to your classmates and instructor. Listen to what is being said to others and try to learn from their instruction.

- Present yourself in a professional manner and be respectful to those around you and the horses at all times. No exceptions.

DO NOT USE CELL PHONES or any other electronic device in class*. Safety of students and horses is a priority in this class and being distracted around horses is not safe, cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction.

Students MUST wear jeans and a shoe/boot with a heel.  NO crop tops or inappropriate clothing (i.e., “see through” or extremely “low rise” jeans). DRESS PROFESSIONALLY with pertinence to the equine industry!

- Waiver of Liability, Helmet Waiver, Rules of the Barn, and Syllabus must be signed and handed back before student can participate in the class.

 

* Failure to follow these guidelines will result in disciplinary action, which will include point reductions and/or removal from the classroom/arena and/or the course.  The instructor retains the right to excuse and/or drop students who consistently disregard these guidelines and display inappropriate behavior.
