Course description:
Fundamentals of financial accounting concepts and interpretation of accounting data; analysis of financial statements; income and cash flow analysis; nature of assets, liabilities and equities; understanding and use of the accounting process. Course will include computer applications.
Course prerequisites:
Recommended prerequisite: MATH1314 and BCIS1305 or equivalent.
Recommended corequisite: MATH 1324 – Mathematics for Business & Social Sciences

E-book Introductory Financial Accounting For Business, 2e by Edmonds/Olds with Connect Plus and SmartBook. McGraw Hill. The lowest price option for you is to buy the etext and access card from the NCTC bookstore. The NCTC bookstore also offers the loose leaf textbook, access card, Smartbook and e-text.
Access Code The access code for McGraw-Hill will be necessary for completing the homework assignments. Please check with the bookstore if you do not have an access code. If you are renting the text, please make sure that the Connect access is included.
Computer and Internet You are responsible for making sure your computer is up to date, working, and has internet access. Please download the free version of Excel. Check with IT Services if you have questions regarding technology. If at some point you find yourself without a working computer, check with campus to see if a computer lab is open so you can complete your assignments. If not, you may try the public library. Due dates cannot be extended due to computer, internet or technical issues you may have.

There is a 35% penalty for late homework assignments, tests, and Learn Smart activities up to 1 week late.

After 1 week, I will no longer accept late assignments.

No late discussions will be accepted. These count as your attendance as well.

The Course Learning Objectives assessments are due at the end of the semester, so late LOs will not be accepted.

COURSE POLICIES
Academic Integrity Policy:
Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation and collusion. Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty. Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

First offense you will receive a warning and a zero on the assignment without the opportunity to make it up.

Second offense you will be dropped from the course.
Attendance Policy:
Discussion Posts/Replies will count as your attendance. If a student misses a discussion post or reply, this will be counted as an absence. Missed discussion forums cannot be made up. Absences may adversely affect your financial aid. Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered. All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies as determined by the instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval and judgement by the faculty member. Approved college sponsored activities are the only absences for which a student should not be held liable and only when provided by a college official ahead of the absence. Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work. Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless they have reasons acceptable to the instructor. Students will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. From Board Policy FC (LOCAL).
Withdrawal Policy:

Use basic accounting terminology and the assumptions, principles, and constraints of the accounting environment.

Identify the difference between accrual and cash basis accounting.

Analyze and record business events in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

Prepare adjusting entries and close the general ledger.

Prepare financial statements in an appropriate U.S. GAAP format, including the following: income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, and statement of shareholders’ equity.

Analyze and interpret financial statements using financial analysis techniques.

Describe the conceptual differences between International Financial Reporting Standards and U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
