Course Description (NCTC Catalog): 

Fundamentals of financial accounting concepts and interpretation of accounting data;  analysis of financial statements; income and cash flow analysis; nature of assets, liabilities  and equities; understanding and use of the accounting process. Course will include  computer applications. 

Course Prerequisite(s): 

Recommended prerequisite: MATH1314 and BCIS1305 or equivalent. 

Recommended co-requisite: MATH 1324 – Mathematics for Business & Social Sciences

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Use basic accounting terminology and the assumptions, principles, and constraints of  the accounting environment. 

Identify the difference between accrual and cash basis accounting. 

Analyze and record business events in accordance with U.S. generally accepted  accounting principles (GAAP). 

Prepare adjusting entries and close the general ledger. 

Prepare financial statements in an appropriate U.S. GAAP format, including the  following: income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, and statement of  shareholders’ equity. 

Analyze and interpret financial statements using financial analysis techniques.

Describe the conceptual differences between International Financial Reporting  Standards and U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Letter grades for this course will be assigned in accordance with NCTC standard grading policy. 

1116 or more points, 90% average on assignments

992-1115 points, 80% average on assignments 

868-991 points, 70% average on assignments

744-867 points, 60% average on assignments

less than 744, less than 60% average




INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL ASSIGNMENTS 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES ASSIGNMENTS – You will be required an assessment for each of the learning outcomes listed above. These assignments may be given more than one time each. If  so, the highest score will be taken. 

EXAMS – You will have a total of 4 exams and 1 final exam (cumulative). They are available in  McGraw Hill Connect. Each exam is timed and worth 100 points. Questions will be based on the  quizzes and homework. Accurately completing the assignments will be critical for your success  on the tests. There are no make-up exams available or extensions on due dates. If you have an emergency or technical  issue and have to miss a test, the lowest exam score will be dropped. 

HOMEWORK AND QUIZZES – Homework questions and quizzes are worth 20 points each. They  are both available in McGraw-Hill Connect. Homework may be attempted an unlimited number  of times. I will take the highest score. There is a 35% penalty for late homework assignments.  Quizzes may be attempted twice. I will drop the lowest homework and lowest quiz grade before submitting final grades. This will cover you  in case of illness, emergencies or technology issues. I cannot drop any of the Learning Objective Quizzes (LOs). 

DISCUSSIONS –Discussions consist of original posts and responses. They are designed to help  you better understand the material by requiring analysis of the material studied. These will  count as your attendance for the week. No late discussions will be accepted. You are required to  post before seeing others' posts. You will not be able to respond before your post. Original  discussion posts should be at about 100 words (5 sentences) of well, thought-out comments. You need to reply to one of your classmates' original posts. Replies must contribute additional information and be about 40 words. Simply agreeing or disagreeing with the posts  without will not receive credit. Please use complete sentences and correct spelling and  grammar. Check the syllabus carefully because some weeks have more than one chapter’s worth  of discussions due. 

ATTENDANCE POLICY 

Discussion Posts will count as your attendance. Regular and punctual attendance is expected of  all students in all classes for which they have registered. All absences are considered to be  unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies as determined by the  instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for  approval and judgement by the faculty member. Approved college sponsored activities are the  only absences for which a student should not be held liable and only when provided by a college  official ahead of the absence. Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of  the responsibility for making up required work. Students will not be allowed to make up an  examination missed due to absence unless they have reasons acceptable to the instructor. A  student who is compelled to be absent when a test is given should petition the instructor, in  advance if possible, for permission to postpone the exam. Students will be dropped from a class  by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s  objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered  sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. From Board  Policy FC (LOCAL).  

Classes will be held for the entire period. Students are expected to attend class 100% of the time  and to be on time for class. The ability to communicate is an important business skill. Students  who are absent from class miss the opportunity to practice this skill. This includes both listening  and speaking.  

Your instructor will take attendance daily. If a student arrives after attendance is recorded, it is  the student’s responsibility to make sure that the instructor records their attendance. If a  student misses more than half an hour of any class period, this will be counted as an absence for  attendance bonus purposes. Missed daily in class assignments cannot be made up. Absences  may adversely affect your financial aid.  

Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is July 17th, 2021

 

CAPSTONE REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCOUNTING MAJORS 

The capstone for the Accounting Technician Certificate is a comprehensive program exam with a  score of 70% or higher. The exam must be scheduled with the Department Chair upon  completion of a certificate. The capstone requirement for the AAS Degree in Accounting is ACNT  2302 Accounting Capstone. It should be taken the last semester before graduation. This course  may not be substituted.

  • Please check Canvas and NCTC email daily for important announcements. 

  • Go to MODULES to start the course, and follow chronologically.  

  • Use the syllabus as a checklist of tasks to complete each week. 

  • Students are required to learn the material by reading the chapters and completing the  assignments. 

  • The access code for McGraw-Hill will be necessary for completing the homework assignments.  Please check with the bookstore if you do not have an access code. 

  • The due date for any assignment in the syllabus is the last possible day to turn in that  assignment in. I strongly recommend turning in assignments at least 1 day before each due date in case you experience technical or other issues. I will not extend due dates. 

  • Students are responsible for keeping track of their own grades. Grades for each assignment will be posted in Canvas. If you believe the grade posted is in error, please contact your  instructor. 

  • It is the student’s responsibility to drop the class. The instructor will not drop the class for you.  You are required to fill out the required paperwork necessary to drop the class before the last  drop date – July 17th, 2021

  • Emails will be answered within 24 hours Monday through noon on Friday unless it is a holiday.  After noon on Friday through Sunday, they may be answered after 2:30pm on Monday.

 

COVID-19 Specific Syllabi Statements Summer 2021

Syllabi statement regarding potential Conversion of Onsite Classes to Online/Remote Format: North Central Texas College students should be aware that in the event of a college closure due to COVID-19 or other health related crisis, onsite classes will be converted to an online/remote format. Students should plan ahead to ensure they have access to the computer equipment (either PC, MAC, or tablet), webcam, and internet connectivity to continue their classes in an online/remote format. Please read all your official North Central Texas College student emails as the transition from onsite to online/remote might require a reorganization in your personal situation. Students will be granted a 72-hour transition and grace period. Online classes will continue as scheduled without disruption. Wear a mask, stay safe, and contact your Instructor as the situation arises. These policies and procedures were updated on June 2, 2021 and are subject to change as conditions change.

Syllabi Statement Regarding Face Coverings: Per the North Central Texas College guidance on face coverings on campus, in the instructional setting, faculty and students are not required to wear face coverings, such as masks or face shields. In May, Texas Governor Gregg Abbott released an Executive Order prohibiting Government entities from mandating the use of masks. As a political subdivision of the State of Texas, NCTC will follow the Governor’s Executive Order for Government entities and effective immediately NCTC is no longer mandating the use of masks while on campus. This order does not mean that you cannot choose to wear a mask, rather it is no longer allowed to be mandated. These policies and procedures were updated on May 19, 2021 and are subject to change.

Return to Standard Attendance Protocol for Face-to-Face Meetings: We recently faced an unprecedented situation in which all of us had to be flexible and make prudent decisions in the best interest of our families, our campus, and our community. In light of this, North Central Texas College is temporarily establishing the requirement that faculty keep records of student attendance for face-to-face course meetings as well as a documented seating chart. In addition, students who are sick or need to quarantine should not attend classes. Students will not be required to provide formal documentation from a health care provider and will not be penalized for COVID-19 related absences when proper notification to campus health officials is made in accordance with the guidelines stated below.

Faculty will:

·  Notify students about important course information and delivery changes through Canvas and campus email.

 

Students should:

·   Provide notification to campus officials if they have tested positive for COVID-19 or have to quarantine so we can confirm reported absence with instructors, monitor, and assist the campus community.

·   Notify instructors in advance of the absence.

·   Connect with that class through Webex if the class session is being transmitted in a hybrid fashion.

·   Keep up with and/or make up missed classwork or assignments.

·   Submit assignments digitally through Canvas or other means as announced by your instructor.

·   Work with their instructors to reschedule exams, labs, and other critical academic activities described in the course syllabus.

·  Check Canvas and campus email daily to receive important announcements pertaining to the course.

During the summer 2021 semester, faculty with face-to-face meetings will establish assigned seating/work stations to facilitate roll-taking, and, if necessary, contact tracing. Additionally, we ask all members of the College community to be attentive to their health, and safeguard others, by following the CDC’s guideline to “stay home when you are sick.” You should stay home if you have symptoms.
