END OF COURSE OUTCOMES (WECM)
Student Learning Outcome
Identify proper safety equipment and tools and identify and select the proper welding process for a given application
Demonstrate skills training using more than one approved welding process
Demonstrate ability to analyze situations and make decisions using skills as taught concerning safety and electrode selections
Select the most economic and practical welding process for the given task
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT MATTER FOR EACH LECTURE/DISCUSSION
Topic
General Description of Subject Matter
Safety in the Welding Shop
Identify several common causes of accidents. Recognize possible safety hazards in the welding shop or other work environments. Recognize and evaluate potential safety hazards and react appropriately to prevent accidents.
Welding Joints, Positions, and Symbols
Identify the five basic welding joints. Label the parts or areas of a grooved butt weld and fillet weld. List and describe welding positions. Locate and apply required weld and joint information from an AWS welding symbol.
Shielded Metal Arc Welding
Demonstrate your ability to use the SMAW process to create acceptable welds on all five basic joints in all positions. Describe all types of weld defects and demonstrate your ability to inspect and differentiate between acceptable and unacceptable welds. Successfully pass a safety test as related to arc welding work areas, equipment, clothing tools, and correct welding procedures in all positions.
Gas Metal and Flux Cored Arc Welding
Correctly prepare metals for welding. Weld using GMAW, make acceptable welds on all types of joints in all positions using GMAW. Weld using FCAW, make acceptable welds on all types of joints in the flat and horizontal positions using FCAW. Be able to pass a safety test on the proper use of GMAW and FCAW processes.
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding
Correctly prepare a tungsten electrode for welding with ac or dc power source. Correctly prepare metals of welding and create acceptable welds on all types of joints in all positions. Correctly set and adjust the welding current and shielding gas flow rate. Weld different base metals using the GTAW process. Identify the potential safety hazards of using the GTAW process in a working environment and describe ways to safely dealing with these hazards.
Welding Tests
Each student is required to pass two welding tests for each welding process. (Oxy-fuel Welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Flux Core Arc Welding, and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Process. The positions required are up to the student to determine. Failure to pass any one of the required ten tests to the visual requirement of the American Welding Society will cause the student to fail.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered. Students absent (excused or unexcused) for ten classes or more may receive an “F” for the course or may be dropped from the course. Class participation assignments and exams will be used to determine regular attendance for online students. A student that is compelled to be absent when a test is given will be allowed to drop an exam from the required exams given during the course. Required work not completed by due dates will not be allowed to be turned in without instructor approval.
Last day to Withdraw
For the spring 2021 semester, the last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is April 26, 2021.
