Course Description: The consolidation of skills acquired at the introductory level. Further development of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasis on comprehension, appreciation, and interpretation of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

Textbooks &Materials Required: The majority of the works we will discuss are available online free of charge, but around mid-semester you will watch the movie También la lluvia in class.

Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete SPAN 2312 will meet the following learning outcomes:
1. Summarize authentic spoken discourse produced by Spanish speakers of diverse origins.
2. Produce Spanish comprehensible to native speakers using complex grammatical structures to communicate analytical and interpretive information in both impromptu and prepared speech.
3. Demonstrate increasing comprehension of authentic written texts in a variety of genres.
4. Write evaluations and critiques at a high intermediate level using complex grammatical structures.
5. Formulate cohesive paragraphs and essays.
6. Interpret cultural practices and products of the Spanish speaking world drawing on authentic materials including literature and the visual arts.

Grading Policy & Procedures
In general, I do not offer extra credit. However, at the end of the semester, I apply standard rounding to everyone. An 89.44 will remain a B, but an 89.45 will round up to an A.

Presentaciones de investigación
These will be frequent, short presentations based on topics related to the cultural, historical or social context of the materials being discussed. You will receive a rubric and detailed information about these as they come up in the semester.
Composiciones
These will be analyses of text. You will receive a rubric and detailed instructions for each composition.
Preguntas orales impromptu
Part of the goals for this level is to evaluate non-practiced speaking. You will receive a topic related to the materials being discussed, a brief time to organize your thoughts, and then must speak about the assigned topic for the required length of time. You will not know the topic beforehand because this must be impromptu speaking.
Tarea y Asistencia
These activities will be used to give you practice speaking, writing, or completing the kind of work you will do on heavier weighted assignments.
Scholastic Integrity
Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but not be limited to cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. See Student Handbook “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Conduct [FLB- (LOCAL)]” #18.
Disciplinary Actions [Student Handbook, #5] “When cheating, collusion, or plagiarism has occurred beyond any reasonable doubt, the instructor may give the student or students involved an “F” on a particular assignment or in the course. [See Scholastic Dishonesty FLB (Local)] The instructor shall make a written report of the incident and of the planned action to his Department Chair. The Department Chair shall report the incident and action to appropriate instructional dean who shall review the case, notify the student and, if necessary, take further action. This may involve either probation or suspension of the student or students in question. If such disciplinary action is deemed necessary, the Dean of Student Services shall be notified, and the action shall be taken through that office.”
Plagiarism, which should be avoided at all costs, includes the following student actions:
- Turning in someone else's ideas, opinions, theories, or work as your own;
- Unintentionally or inadvertently turning in someone else's ideas, opinions, theories, or work as your own as the result of failing to document sources both internally and in the Works Cited;
- Copying words, ideas, or images from someone without giving credit; Failing to put a quotation in quotations marks;
- Giving incorrect information about the source of information, quotations, or images;
- Changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit;
- Copying so many words, ideas, or images from a source that it makes up the majority of the student's work, whether or not the student gives credit.

In general, late work will not receive credit unless you have contacted me for an emergency.

Grade input
I try to get work graded and back to you by the next week, but remember that the standard grade turn-around is two weeks.
