Course Description:The consolidation of skills acquired at the introductory level. Further development of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasis on comprehension, appreciation, and interpretation of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

Minimum Technical Skills

In order to succeed in this course, you must be able to

  • compose, edit, format and spellcheck documents using a word processor
  • record and upload videos, audio recordings, and screencasts (minimal instructions provided)

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete SPAN 2311 will meet the following learning outcomes:

1.       Demonstrate comprehension of authentic spoken discourse produced by Spanish speakers of diverse origins.

2.       Produce oral Spanish comprehensible to native speakers using complex grammatical structures to narrate, describe, and elicit information.

3.       Demonstrate increasing comprehension of authentic written texts in a variety of genres.

4.       Write descriptions and narratives at a low intermediate level using complex grammatical structures.

5.       Formulate cohesive paragraphs and short/simple essays.

6.       Describe cultural practices and products of the Spanish-speaking world drawing on authentic materials including literature and the visual arts.

Grading Policy & Procedures

In general, I do not offer extra credit. However, at the end of the semester, I apply standard rounding to everyone. An 89.4 will remain a B, but an 89.5 will round up to an A.

Course Calendar

The dates on the course calendar are based on the Valley View High School academic calendar from August 2020. The class is scheduled to meet in person on Mondays and Thursdays. There are three Mondays off during the fall semester. During those weeks, the class will meet Wednesday and Thursday. Due dates will be adjusted in Canvas to allow adequate time for students to complete assignments.  In the case of a school shutdown due to COVID-19, please watch for announcements on Canvas and contact the instructor with any questions. A VVHS shutdown will not automatically trigger a change in Canvas due dates.

Dropping the class

To withdraw from the class, please meet with Ms. Metzler, and go to https://www.nctc.edu/current-students/drop-withdraw-course.html. The last day to drop for the fall semester is Monday, Nov. 2.

 

 

 

Scholastic Integrity

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but not be limited to cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion.  See Student Handbook “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Conduct [FLB- (LOCAL)]” #18.

Disciplinary Actions [Student Handbook, #5] “When cheating, collusion, or plagiarism has occurred beyond any reasonable doubt, the instructor may give the student or students involved an “F” on a particular assignment or in the course. [See Scholastic Dishonesty FLB (Local)] The instructor shall make a written report of the incident and of the planned action to his Department Chair.  The Department Chair shall report the incident and action to appropriate instructional dean who shall review the case, notify the student and, if necessary, take further action.  This may involve either probation or suspension of the student or students in question. If such disciplinary action is deemed necessary, the Dean of Student Services shall be notified, and the action shall be taken through that office.”

Plagiarism, which should be avoided at all costs, includes the following student actions:

  1. Turning in someone else's ideas, opinions, theories, or work as your own;
  2. Unintentionally or inadvertently turning in someone else's ideas, opinions, theories, or work as your own as the result of failing to document sources both internally and in the Works Cited;
  3. Copying words, ideas, or images from someone without giving credit; Failing to put a quotation in quotations marks;
  4. Giving incorrect information about the source of information, quotations, or images;
  5. Changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit;
  6. Copying so many words, ideas, or images from a source that it makes up the majority of the student's work, whether or not the student gives credit.

Attendance and Late Work Policy

Even though some of this class is online, it is not self-paced. You must plan to log into Canvas several times a week and should do the work by the due dates. Language cannot be learned in big chunks. It must be learned in small bits with frequent review of the previously covered material in order to be acquired.

As a general rule, your work will be officially due at 11:59 p.m. on the due date.  However, times will vary for the exams. Please double check your deadlines on Canvas, and contact the instructor if you have any questions.

Exámenes

The exams will cover the grammar learned up to that point in the semester and include both a writing activity and a separate oral activity. The writing and oral activities will be based on the videos, readings, and activities covered up to that point in the semester.

Presentaciones

You will be assigned a general topic to research and prepare for your presentations. Be sure to make time to practice your presentations so that you can include inflection and check your pronunciation before you are graded on it.

Escritura

You will be given a choice of topics to write about. You will prepare an outline and several different drafts as part of the revision process.

Práctica

There will be a variety of activities to help you practice the grammar and concepts being introduced. Some of the activities will also test your auditory comprehension or give you practice in speaking or writing in Spanish.

These activities will allow you to demonstrate your comprehension of authentic texts (not written for language learners) and video clips as well as practice analyzing them.

Grade input

I try to get work graded and back to you by the next week, but remember that the standard grade turn-around is two weeks.

Tobacco-Free Campus
