The semester will consistent of unit tests, MindTap assignments, Technique Chart, and a final. Your grade will be calculated by points earned out of points possible.

 

MindTap: Assignments will be due for a grade in MindTap for each chapter. They will be due at 11:00 pm the night before the test.

 

No extra credit will be given in this course. If you receive below a 75 you will be dismissed for the program.

 

To be successful in this class you must: 1) Complete all reading assignments prior to class 2) pay attention and participate in class 3) be present in class 4) manage assignments by starting on assignments as soon as they are assigned 5) study, read, ask questions 6) take notes and 7) do not wait until the night before to study for an examination, study the material each day.

 

Final exams will be comprehensive in this course.

PROGRAM PURPOSE STATEMENT

 

NCTC seeks to implement its goal of providing quality technical programs leading directly to careers in semi-skilled and skilled occupations, and quality technical education programs up to two years in length leading to certificates and associate degrees by offering a coherent sequence of courses with appropriate breadth and depth to prepare students for success in the workforce.

 

DEPARTMENTAL PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Radiologic Technology department prepares students for licensure, introduces students to advanced imaging modalities, instills value in advanced degrees in the health care profession, and encourages graduates to advanced degrees.

 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Course Outcomes: Continuation of Radiographic image quality and the effects of exposure variables, and the synthesis of all variables in image production.

 

Student Outcomes:

  1.  Analyze image quality.
  2.  Utilize procedures for minimizing patient exposure.
  3. Adapt technical variables to changing conditions.

 

Attendance: Class will be in the form of synchronous online learning. We will all log on to WebEx in canvas at 9 on Mondays to attend lecture. If I don’t finish the course material in the given time period I will post a voice-over PP of the remaining lecture. Synchronous classes will also be recorded if you would like to watch them again at a later date. The student has a responsibility to attend all classes at the designated time of that class.  If a student does not, they may be classified as tardy or absent.  The following criteria of those classifications are solely those of the instructor of this class.

Because lectures are held only once a week, it is critical for you to be in class.  Do not schedule appointments or outside business for this time period.  Absences due to illness, accident, etc., will not be excused except with a doctor's note, and notification of the absence must occur no later than 15 minutes prior to class.

 

Tardiness:  Any student arriving after the posted catalogs begin time for the class/lab will be considered tardy.  If student is tardy a total of two (2) times, the student will be penalized in the form of one (1) absence.  There will be no exceptions to this policy.  Students must be prepared and in their seat or otherwise they will be noted as tardy.

 

Absences:  A total of two (2) absences will result in failure of the course and possible dismissal from the program. 

 

TESTING PROCEDURES:

Lecture tests/quizzes may contain multiple choice, true-false, fill-in-the-blank, essay, diagrams, or other testing methods. Test times are outlined in the syllabus. If a change is made from the testing schedule it will be announced in class. Tests will be online through Canvas. Tests will use lockdown browser and respondus monitor. If there is suspected cheating, I have the right to give a 0 for a specific exam.

 

MAKE-UP EXAMINATIONS:

If for any reason you miss an exam you MUST let me know in advance to reschedule. If you do not inform me that you will miss an exam it will automatically be 20 points off the first time. If it happens again I will not re-open the test.

 

NOTE: Your textbook contains chapter specific objectives that will be helpful in providing direction.  Please review these objectives along with the chapters prior to the date scheduled for the content to maximize comprehension and retention of course materials.  All of the content within the textbook is testable material for the portion of the course in which it is assigned.

Exposure Chart: Need to be typed, professional, and accurate for your clinical site.  These should not be copied or duplicated from your clinical site.  These need to reflect actual settings used at your site or to a specific room. An overview will be posted to Modules of what needs to be included.  This is not a group project. Rubric can be found on Canvas.

  

Software

Canvas is web-based, so there is no need to download any special software on your computer to access the system. However, you will need the following:

  • A web browser that is compatible with Canvas, such as Mozilla Firefox

  • A word processing program, such as Microsoft Word (preferred)
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader software (http://get.adobe.com/reader/)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer (http://powerpoint-viewer-2010.en.softonic.com/)

  • A current anti-virus software

 

Students are expected to check their email and the Canvas courses at least 3 times each week for announcements and/or important messages. Although email is typically returned within 24 hours, your instructor may take up to 48 hours to respond to an email received during Monday-Friday or up to 72 hours if the email is received on the weekend. Plan accordingly! If you do not receive a reply, check in with instructor to verify received. 

 

Beyond standard NCTC holidays and breaks, the instructor will notify students of any extended periods of time when email contact is not practical (professional meetings, etc).  The instructor will be available to meet face-to-face with any interested students at a designated time and place.  Office hours vary.

NOTE:  If at any point you are having problems understanding the material or have questions, please do not hesitate to discuss your concerns with the course instructor.  DO NOT wait until the end of the semester to attempt to salvage a failing grade.  Keep a running average of you grades throughout the semester and discuss concerns when the average falls below passing.

 

CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION: All clinical affiliate patient records are confidential in nature. Requests for information concerning a patient should be referred to the clinical instructor or designate. The students are expected to maintain absolute confidentiality of all data involving the patient and the practicum affiliate. Use of confidential information for personal (student) gain or defamation (patient) purposes will result in dismissal from the program. Breech of patient confidentiality may (and probably will) result in failure of the course and possible dismissal from the program.

 

Last day to Withdraw

 

For the Fall 2020 semester, the last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is November 2, 2020.

Covid-19

The Financial Aid Office is responsible for administering a variety of programs for students who need assistance in financing their education.  The first step for financial aid is to complete a FAFSA.  For more information, please visit your nearest Financial Aid Office.

 

In partnership with Student Services, Emergency Management, and Faculty Senate, the Provost’s Office is providing the following advice for faculty regarding wearing face coverings in classrooms.

In a situation where a student attends a class without wearing a face covering over the nose and mouth (and without prior approval through NCTC’s Office of Enrollment Management at [ccove@nctc.edu]ccove@nctc.edu), faculty should first remind the student of the NCTC policy requiring wearing a face covering while on campus. Faculty can provide guidance on getting a mask or face shield from a campus main entrance. Should a student refuse to gain and/or wear the face covering, faculty should ask the student to leave the classroom immediately.

If the student refuses to gain and/or wear a face covering and will not leave the classroom, then there are two options:

1)      Dismiss class in order to de-escalate the situation without contacting campus police and then complete a student incident report through a CARES Reporting Form in MyNCTC. The student will not be permitted to return to class until cleared through the Dean of Student Affairs. This is the preferred option.

2)      Contact campus police should the situation turn confrontational and disruptive to the educational environment. After class, complete a CARES Reporting Form about the incident. A decision on if the student will return will be made after a review of the incident. Police Officers and public safety support personnel can be reached for each campus by calling (940) 668-4270 and selecting the appropriate number from the automated system.  If there is an immediate threat to life safety - dial 911.​

NCTC employees, including faculty and staff, are not expected to put themselves at risk while enforcing college policies. Students are also not expected to be responsible for other students’ conduct.

Syllabi statement regarding potential Conversion of Onsite Classes to Online/Remote Format: North Central Texas College students should be aware that in the event of a college closure due to COVID-19, onsite classes will be converted to an online/remote format. Students should plan ahead to ensure they have access to the computer equipment (either PC, MAC, or tablet), webcam, and internet connectivity to continue their classes in an online/remote format. Please read all your official North Central Texas College student emails as the transition from onsite to online/remote might require a reorganization in your personal situation. Students will be granted a 72-hour transition and grace period. Online classes will continue as scheduled without disruption. Wear a mask, stay safe, and contact your Instructor as the situation arises. These policies and procedures were updated on July 30, 2020 and are subject to change.

 

Syllabi Statement Regarding Face Coverings: Per the North Central Texas College guidance on face coverings on campus, in the instructional setting, faculty and students must wear face coverings, such as masks or face shields. Students without coverings, or those who do not comply with the rules relating to face coverings, will not be able to participate in on-campus classroom activities. To request an exception to this requirement, students should contact the NCTC HR Office of Enrollment Management (ccove@nctc.edu). Failure to comply with the face coverings requirement may result in the Instructor directing the student to leave the classroom. Any student asked to leave the classroom may be referred to the student conduct officer. These policies and procedures were updated on July 30, 2020 and are subject to change.

 

Temporary COVID-19 Attendance Policy for Face-to-Face Meetings: We are facing an unprecedented situation in which all of us must be flexible and make prudent decisions in the best interest of our families, our campus, and our community. In light of this, North Central Texas College is temporarily establishing the requirement that faculty keep records of student attendance for face-to-face course meetings as well as a documented seating chart. In addition, students who are sick or need to quarantine should not attend classes. Students will not be required to provide formal documentation from a health care provider and will not be penalized for COVID-19 related absences when proper notification to campus health officials is made in accordance with the guidelines stated below.

 

Faculty will:

 

  • Notify students about important course information and delivery changes through Canvas and campus email.

 

Students should:

  • Provide notification to campus officials (via NCTC Daily Health Check protocol through Canvas) if they have tested positive for COVID-19 or have to quarantine so we can confirm reported absence with instructors, monitor, and assist the campus community.
  • Notify instructors in advance of the absence.
  • Connect with that class through Webex if the class session is being transmitted in a hybrid fashion.
  • Keep up with and/or make up missed classwork or assignments.
  • Submit assignments digitally through Canvas or other means as announced by your instructor.
  • Work with their instructors to reschedule exams, labs, and other critical academic activities described in the course syllabus.
  • Check Canvas and campus email daily to receive important announcements pertaining to the course.

During this period, faculty with face-to-face meetings will establish assigned seating/work stations to facilitate roll-taking, and, if necessary, contact tracing. Additionally, we ask all members of the College community to be attentive to their health, and safeguard others, by following the CDC’s guideline to “stay home when you are sick.” You should stay home if you have symptoms. Testing for Covid-19

 

Negative test outcome:

We will need to wait at least 72 hours before the student can return to class with a negative test. This buffer is to see how the student feels over the next few days. If the symptoms do not get worse or we have a doctor’s note allowing each to resume normal activity, at that point, the student may continue.

 

Positive test outcome:

If positive,  then all students and instructors notified and most likely cancel (in person ) or move class  (online) for self -quarantine for 14 days, plus contact tracing. 

Or

For students that are quarantined, asynchronous recorded live session (for those in quarantine) 

 

 

We wanted to let you know that if you are working with a student that needs additional technology to be successful in their classes, the college has some laptops and chromebooks that are available for the students to use.  Please email Caitlyn Owen at cowen@nctc.edu the name, email and phone number of the student and she will coordinate with the student and IT to get them the computer.

 

We also wanted to let you know that the Foundation does have additional emergency funds available if you are working with a student that needs additional help.  Under the MyNCTC, faculty and staff page, under documents there is a student emergency aid form that you can complete and email back to Karen Roos at kroos@nctc.edu and we will review and assist these students.

 

Disability Services (OSD)

The Office for Students with Disabilities provides accommodations for students who have a documented disability. A disability is anything that can interfere with learning, such as a learning disability, psychological challenge, physical illness, or injury. Accommodations may include extra time on tests, tests in a distraction reduced environment, volunteer note-taker in class, etc.

 

The North Central Texas College’s (NCTC) Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) is committed to assisting students with accommodations related to all disabilities, including COVID-19. Early Alert and CARES

The NCTC Early Alert program has been established to assist students who are at risk of failing or withdrawing from a course. Your instructor may refer you to this program if you are missing assignments, failing tests, excessively absent, or have personal circumstances impacting your academic performance. If submitted as an Early Alert you will be notified via your NCTC e-mail address and then contacted by a Counseling and Testing advisor or counselor to discuss possible strategies for completing your course successfully.

 The NCTC CARES (Campus Assessment Response Evaluation Services) Team addresses behavior which may be disruptive, harmful or pose a threat to to the health and safety of the NCTC community-such as stalking, harassment, physical or emotional abuse, violent or threatening behavior, or self-harm. As a student, you have the ability to report concerning behavior which could impact your own safety or the safety of another NCTC student. Early Alert and CARES  

The NCTC Early Alert program assists students who are at risk of failing or withdrawing from a course. Faculty and staff may refer students through the Early Alert process at any point in the semester in an effort to provide appropriate intervention and access to support services. Examples of behaviors that could prompt an Early Alert referral could be missing assignments, failing tests, excessive absences, or personal circumstances impacting academic performance. A student submitted as an Early Alert will be contacted by an academic advisor or success coach through text, phone, and/or via their NCTC e-mail address to discuss any current challenges as well as helpful resources and success strategies-we want our students to finish strong and know that education is a partnership!
