PROGRAM PURPOSE STATEMENT

 

 

NCTC seeks to implement its goal of providing quality technical programs leading directly to careers in semi-skilled and skilled occupations, and quality technical education programs up to two years in length leading to certificates and associate degrees by offering a coherent sequence of courses with appropriate breadth and depth to prepare students for success in the workforce.

 

DEPARTMENTAL PURPOSE STATEMENT

 

 

The Business Office Technology department provides quality courses in office systems technology that will prepare students for employment and advancement in today’s technology intense workplace. Through this preparation, students will have the opportunity to transfer to 4 year universities to continue their education in Applied Sciences.

Creating and Editing a Document

Students will be able to create, save, and open documents; enter and select text, use paragraph breaks, line breaks, and non-breaking spaces; move and copy text, change fonts, font sizes, and attributes; change text alignment, line spacing, and paragraph spacing; use smart lookup and proofreading tools; and customize document properties.

Formatting and Customizing Documents

Students will be able to customize margins and page layout; set, use, and edit tab stops; insert page numbers, headers, and footers; use page and section breaks; use bulleted, numbered, and multilevel lists; use styles and themes; use find and replace; use borders, and shading, and hyperlinks.

Automating Tasks Using Templates and Macros

Customizing Word and Using OneDrive and Office Online

Last day to Withdraw                For the Fall 2017 semester, the last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is November 9, 2017.

 

Student Rights & Responsibilities

 

NCTC Board policy FLB (Local) Student Rights and Responsibilities states that each student shall be charged with notice and knowledge of the contents and provisions of the rules and regulations concerning student conduct. These rules and regulations are published in the Student Handbook published in conjunction with the College Catalog. All students shall obey the law, show respect for properly constituted authority, and observe correct standards of conduct.

NCTC restricts the use of all tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco on campus property. NCTC is aware that tobacco use influences underage students which cumulates unsightly tobacco litter and interferes with assuring clean air for all who come to NCTC. NCTC recognizes the health hazards of tobacco use and of exposure to second hand smoke.

Information on a tobacco cessation program is available for students, faculty, staff who wish to stop using tobacco products. Academic Dishonesty

  

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation and collusion.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”. 

 

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

  • Zero (0) on the assignment
  • A failing grade for the class

Disability Services (ODS)                 The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) provides accommodations for students who have a documented disability. A disability is anything that can interfere with learning, such as a learning disability, psychological challenge, physical illness or injury. Accommodations may include extra time on tests, tests in a distraction reduced environment, volunteer note taker in class, etc.

Early Alert and CARES                 The NCTC Early Alert program has been established to assist students who are at risk of failing or withdrawing from a course. Your instructor may refer you to this program if you are missing assignments, failing tests, excessively absent, or have personal circumstances impacting your academic performance. If submitted as an Early Alert you will be notified via your NCTC e-mail address and then contacted by a Counseling and Testing advisor or counselor to discuss possible strategies for completing your course successfully.

 

The NCTC CARES (Campus Assessment Response Evaluation Services) Team addresses behavior which may be disruptive, harmful or pose a threat to the health and safety of the NCTC community-such as stalking, harassment, physical or emotional abuse, violent or threatening behavior, or self-harm. Student Success offers academic coaching, tutoring, including a Writing Center, a Math Lab, free 24/7 online tutoring through Grade Results and assist new students acclimate to college by providing computer lab services for prospective students. ATTENDANCE POLICY

 

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies as determined by the instructor.  It is the student responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval and judgement by the faculty member.  Approved college sponsored activities are the only absences for which a student should not be held liable and only when provided by a college official ahead of the absence.  Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work.  Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless they have reasons acceptable to the instructor.  A student who is compelled to be absent when a test is given should petition the instructor, in advance if possible, for permission to postpone the exam.  Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives.  Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. Students are evaluated on the participation in the required weekly discussions for this online course, which cannot be measured if you do not participate.  The instructor reserves the “right” to reduce the final grade awarded for each class missed after two absences (one absence in classes that meet once a week).  The instructor also reserves the right to drop the student for excessive absences.

Every two tardies are counted as one absence.  It is the student’s responsibility to drop the class through the Registrar’s office before the November 9th   drop date to avoid an “F” on their transcript.

 

Missed Examinations will be counted as a zero. No make-up examinations allowed.

 

OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION

 

 

  • All course material is available via the Internet through NCTC’s CANVAS Learning Management You can access CANVAS at https://nctc.instructure.com/login. Please go to https://nctc.instructure.com/login and bookmark (save to favorites) for this site. It is not necessary to access CANVAS through the NCTC Website.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to check the Course website, Cengage website, and his or her course mail at least three times
  • If a student should experience problems accessing the course material in CANVAS OR sending/receiving course mail, it is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor
  • Assignments are due on the assigned All weekly assignments are due by 11:59 pm every Sunday. The instructor may not be available to answer questions from Friday after 3pm to 8am Monday. There will be no late assignments accepted period.
  • Student data files may be downloaded from the textbook publisher’s Website. See instructions on the Course modules in Student files that are performed for homework can be downloaded from the Cengage website within the course you are taking.

Workforce Education Program Elements (SCANS Skills)

 

The Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) conducted extensive research and interviews and determined that “workplace know-how” consists of two elements: foundations skills and workplace competencies. Upon successful completion of the courses in this program, students will have demonstrated the following competencies:

  • Interpersonal Skills: A worker must work with others effectively to (i) participate as a member of a team, (ii) teach others new skills, (iii) serve clients/customers, (iv) exercise leadership, (v) negotiate, and (vi) work with diversity.

 

  • Information: A worker must be able to (i) acquire and use information, (ii) organize and maintain information, (iii) interpret and communicate information and (iv) use computers to process

 

  • Systems: A worker must understand complex interrelationships as in (i) understanding systems, (ii) monitor and correct performance, and (iii) improve and design

 

  • Technology: A worker must be able to work with a variety of technologies, e.g. (i) select technology, (ii) apply technology, and (iii) maintain and troubleshoot
