Syllabus

Welcome to NCBRI!  I hope you're already off to a great semester.  In order to help you orientate yourself to the course and to Canvas, we'll begin with introductions and common questions about this class.

  • Need to contact your instructor? Call or text me at 817-992-5169. Or, message me via the Inbox. Or, email me at mpace@nctc.edu
  • Why am I enrolled in this course? This course is designed as extra support to help you improve reading rate, comprehension, and vocabulary. I look forward to working with you this semester to help you improve your literacy skills and study skills needed to successfully complete your college degree.
  • Is this a graded/stand-alone course? NCBR is a course that is meant to supplement and support the skills you will be covering in your ENGL 1301 class. There is no additional textbook required; however, you will receive periodic readings and materials to help you develop more confidence in your comprehension of academic texts. You will receive a grade of Pass/Fail for NCBR.
  • How much time should you expect to spend on this course? You should plan to spend at least 4-5 hours each week preparing for your ENGL 1301 class in addition to the 3 hours of classroom time.  NCBR can definitely be included within that time. If you find yourself getting frustrated with your readings for ENGL 1301, contact me immediately, so that I may offer assistance.  Also, as part of your NCBR requirements, you will need to plan to visit the Writing Center/Lab on your campus for at least one hour each week.  During this time - which you may schedule around your other classes - plan to work on your ENGL 1301 assignments for that week, complete any materials/discussions you may receive through NCBR, and/or work with the tutors in the Center on any other relative assignment/reading.
  • How often do I need to report to my NCBR instructor?  Plan to email your instructor weekly at mpace@nctc.edu to report the days/hours you've logged in the Writing Center, and to send any questions/concerns/requests.  Remember:  The purpose of NCBR is to help YOU.  Please take advantage of all tools available to you.  We're here to help you be successful!
