Course description:  This course is intended to build or reinforce a foundation in fundamental mathematics concepts and skills. It includes the concepts of geometry, measurement, probability, and statistics with an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking.

Course prerequisites:  MATH 1314 College Algebra

 

Required course materials:  MyLab Math access code (e-text included in MyLab Math access)

Optional course materials:  A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers, Billstein/Boschmans/Libeskind/Lott, 13th edition, 2020, Pearson

STUDENT HOURS (OFFICE HOURS)

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class, or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one.  Student hours may be held in-person or online.  See below for instructions on where/when/how instructors will offer student hours in this class.

 

To schedule a virtual meeting, please message me in Canvas or email me at bowens@nctc.edu.  We can then coordinate a time and I can send you a Webex link.  I will also be holding virtual office hours throughout the semester where students ask questions, etc. in a group setting.  These times will be posted in the weekly announcements/checklist.

 

MATH TUTORING LAB

 

Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance.  There are math tutors available on every campus and online.  This service is free for all students enrolled in an NCTC math class. The faculty member reserves the right to make changes to this published syllabus if it is in the best interest of the educational development of this class. Any such changes will be announced as soon as possible in person and/or writing.

Final grade scale:  90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

 

The Midterm and Final Exam must be taken in-person, on campus, in a proctored environment.  Students are encouraged to take their tests at an NCTC testing center, but if that option does not work please contact your instructor to determine an alternate time/place to take your test.

NCTC Testing Centers are open from Monday-Thursday throughout the summer from 7:30 – 5:30.

Late work policy:

For Homework Assignments in MyMathLab each problem may be attempted an unlimited number of times.  For problems submitted after the due date a 20% late penalty will be given.

For Quizzes in MyMathLab all problems must be attempted together and submitted at once.  There are three total attempts for each quiz.  If a quiz is completed after the due date a 20% late penalty will be given.


If a test/discussion is missed please contact the instructor as soon as possible.

COURSE POLICIES

 

 

Academic Integrity Policy:

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion.  The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Code of Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.  

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

  1. Zero on the assignment
  2. Failing grade for the course

 

Attendance Policy:

Withdrawal Policy

A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

 

Last Day to withdraw from a Summer II course with a “W” is: Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

 

Student Learning Outcomes:  At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Apply fundamental terms of geometry such as points, lines, and planes to describe two and three dimensional figures.
  2. Make and test conjectures about figures and geometric relationships.
  3. Use a variety of methods to identify and justify congruency and similarity of geometric objects.
  4. Perform geometric transformations.
  5. Demonstrate fundamental probability techniques and apply those techniques to solve problems.
  6. Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
  7. Recognize, examine, and utilize the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
  8. Perform measurement processes and explain the concept of a unit of measurement.
  9. Develop and use formulas for the perimeter, area, and volume for a variety of figures.
