Course description:  This course is intended to build or reinforce a foundation in fundamental mathematics concepts and skills. It includes the conceptual development of the following: sets, functions, numeration systems, number theory, and properties of the various number systems with an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking.

 

Course prerequisites:  MATH 1314/1414 College Algebra

STUDENT HOURS (OFFICE HOURS)

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class, or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one.  Student hours may be held in-person or online.  See below for instructions on where/when/how instructors will offer student hours in this class.

MATH TUTORING LAB

 

Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance.  There are math tutors available on every campus and online.  This service is free for all students enrolled in an NCTC math class. SUMMARY OF COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

 

 

 

List of graded assignments:  Graded assignments are comprised of class activities, mini-projects, MyLab assignments, MyLab quizzes, projects, and tests. Please see details in Canvas course.

 

Final grade scale:  90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

 

Homework, Online Activities, Participation
All homework, online activities and participation is combined at 20% of your final
grade.  Practice problems will be assigned through MyMathLab (MML) (the online
portion of your text) and is found via Canvas. Online activities will vary in nature.
Participation is expected for online activities and discussions and will be included in
your grade. You will have multiple assignments each week with varying due dates.
 


Quizzes
Quizzes are 30% of your grade.  You will have a quiz usually once a week. You will get full instructions in the modules about each quiz.

Project
You will be assigned one Projec that helps connect what you are learning to teaching the concepts to elementary students. More information will be given as the class progresses. The project will be counted in your Exams category which is 50% of your overall grade.

 

Exams

You will have 2 unit exams and 1 final exam (plus a Project as described above). This will be 50% of your overall grade.  Exams will be taken in person at a testing center. Please view class calendar for testing dates.

 

 

Late work policy: Late work will typically not be accepted unless due to illness or emergency. Please contact Mrs. Brown if you feel you need an extension on an assignment.

COURSE POLICIES

 

 

Academic Integrity Policy:

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion.  The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Code of Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.  

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

  1. Zero on the assignment
  2. Failing grade for the course

 

Attendance Policy:

Withdrawal Policy

A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

 

Last day to withdraw from the course with a “W” is: Monday, October 31, 2022

  1. Explain and model the arithmetic operations for whole numbers and integers.
  2. Explain and model computations with fractions, decimals, ratios, and percentages.
